Kyle Whittingham lands in top 10 of ESPN rankings

Michigan football took a notable turn this offseason with significant changes to its coaching staff, including the departure of Sherrone Moore and the arrival of former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham. Whittingham brings a long and proven track record, having spent 21 seasons at the helm of the Utes and compiling a résumé that underscores his capabilities as a head coach. While there have been some uneven seasons along the way, the situation in Ann Arbor presents him with a roster and program that many feel are more favorable than any he has previously coached. Although public enthusiasm for the maize and blue has not been overwhelming, national expectations are high for what his tenure could yield, even if those expectations don’t necessarily align with the immediate upcoming season.
ESPN released its overall head coach rankings, listing Whittingham in the top 10 at No. 9. Within those rankings, Adam Rittenberg placed him at No. 6, while Mark Schlabach placed him outside the top 10 overall. The breakdown shows Whittingham with a record of 177-88 (.668) despite it being his first year at Michigan, and he earned 17 points in ESPN’s assessment. A notable historical footnote: since the NCAA split between the FBS and FCS in 1978, Whittingham is the only FBS coach to have faced Michigan at least three times and remain undefeated against them, going 3-0 with wins in 2008, 2014, and 2015. Additionally, Whittingham’s 177 wins stand as the most in Utah history, with only one other Utah coach surpassing 100 wins—Ike Armstrong, who collected 141 victories from 1925 to 1949.
Within the Big Ten landscape, Whittingham sits behind No. 1 Curt Cignetti, No. 3 Ryan Day, and No. 5 Dan Lanning, yet he sits ahead of Mario Cristobal and Kalen DeBoer, who are tied for No. 10 in ESPN’s rankings. As Whittingham takes over the Michigan roster, there is anticipation about how much more he might achieve with greater depth and resources compared to his time at Utah, where he often faced implicit constraints. His coaching acumen was evident in his past battles against top programs; for instance, he outdueled Cristobal while at Oregon in 2021 and defeated Lincoln Riley’s USC in 2022 to capture back-to-back Pac-12 titles.
The early returns and long-term potential of Whittingham’s Michigan tenure will unfold as the season progresses, and observers will watch to see whether he can translate the Utah model of success into sustained Big Ten excellence. This analysis stems from a broader discussion about his place among contemporaries and how his leadership may influence Michigan’s trajectory in the coming years. This piece originally appeared on Wolverines Wire, highlighting Whittingham’s appearance in ESPN’s top 10 rankings as a notable development for better visibility and search optimization.
