Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham has been vague regarding right tackle Andrew Sprague health issue that surfaced about 24 hours before the game against UTEP last Saturday, Sept. 19. It surprised Whittingham and his staff and it remains unclear when he could return.Sprague went through the team walkthrough last Friday, but then offensive line coach Jim Harding delivered the bad news to Whittingham.“’What? Why? What happened between a half-hour ago and now?’” Whittingham, appearing Monday, Sept. 21 on the “Inside Michigan Football” radio show, said of his response to Harding. “It was just a weird thing,. Hopefully we get Andrew back. That’s the major concern right now.”Whittingham was unable to put a timeline on Sprague’s return and said it could range from a week to several weeks.“We just don’t know,” Whittingham said. “We’re trying to sort through that, to make sure we get the exact diagnosis and treat this thing the right way.”Michigan running back Jordan Marshall has been dealing with a nagging lower-body injury since Week 2 against Oklahoma, but Whittingham assured his availability for the Big Ten opener against Iowa on Sept. 26 at Michigan Stadium.“Unless there’s a setback,” Whittingham said on the show. “He came out of this game (against UTEP) feeling much better than when he came out of last game. So there’s been progress there.”The focus, though, is on Sprague.“The primary concern is his health and making sure we can get him back to where he needs to be,” Whittingham said. “He’s a big part of what we’re doing. We hope to have him back sooner rather than later.”achengelis@detroitnews.com@chengelisThis article originally appeared on The Detroit News: Kyle Whittingham offers updates on Andrew Sprague, Jordan Marshall
