Kylian Mbappe condemns Paraguayan senator for racial abuse after World Cup win

France star Kylian Mbappe condemned Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla after she launched a racist attack against him in the wake of Paraguay’s exit from the World Cup in the Round of 32. Mbappe had just converted the decisive spot kick in the 70th minute, delivering a 1-0 victory for France in a tense and fiercely contested match against Paraguay. In the aftermath, Amarilla took to social media to describe Mbappe as a “colonized Cameroonian desperately trying to pass himself off as French” and criticized Paraguay’s players for not slapping him as a show of solidarity. Her inflammatory remarks drew immediate backlash from many quarters.
Mbappe responded with a firm rebuke, declaring, “You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honour throughout the competition. Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country. I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world.” His message underscored a commitment to standing up against racism and defending the dignity of players and fans alike, insisting that such hateful rhetoric has no place in sport or society.
In response to Amarilla’s comments, the French Football Federation (FFF) stated that they would pursue criminal charges against the Paraguayan senator, labeling her remarks as “criminal and reprehensible.” The outcry extended beyond France, with many observers emphasizing the broader fight against racism in football and in public life. The incident added to a growing discourse about accountability for leaders who use public platforms to spread discriminatory rhetoric, especially when directed at high-profile athletes who serve as ambassadors for their nations on the world stage.
Around the same time, French President Emmanuel Macron publicly backed Mbappe’s stance. In a message broadcast across social media, Macron praised Mbappe for taking a stand against racism, saying, “Another goal for Kylian Mbappe. Against racism this time. All my support. When words defile, our values respond: dignity, respect, fraternity.” The president’s show of support highlighted the symbolic role Mbappe plays beyond the football pitch, as a figure who channels a broader fight against discrimination and intolerance.
The Paraguayan government also weighed in, expressing that it “deplores and rejects” Amarilla’s statements, which it described as incompatible with the country’s values and principles. Paraguay emphasized its commitment to peaceful coexistence and human dignity, and its officials reiterated their stance against racism in sport and public life.
Mbappe has emerged as one of the standout performers in this World Cup, currently tied for second place in the Golden Boot race with seven goals. Following the victory over Paraguay, France advances to the quarterfinals, where they are set to face Morocco in a pivotal matchup on Thursday. The incident with Amarilla has accordingly shifted attention to the ongoing global debate about racism, accountability, and the responsibility of public figures to model respectful discourse in sports and society at large. As Mbappe’s goals continue to accumulate on the field, his stance off the pitch is reinforcing a broader narrative about inclusion, equality, and the enduring fight against discrimination in football.
