Kylian Mbappé doesn’t duck from responsibility for missed PK

Kylian Mbappé did not shy away from taking responsibility for his missed penalty against Morocco, but he also offered insight into the unusual sequence of events that led up to it. “I shot my penalty poorly, but it was tricky: there was a mix-up. The referee tells me there’s a penalty. I get ready. Then he comes to tell me there might not be a penalty after all. I let myself get distracted. I wasn’t familiar with that scenario yet,” Mbappé explained, as captured by 90Min.com’s Ilies Peters.
Whether fans accept that explanation or not, the moment felt anything but routine. Penalty takers spend those critical seconds mentally preparing for one of football’s most pressurized moments. To have that preparation interrupted by uncertainty over whether the kick would even take place is a rare disruption that few players experience.
Credit to Mbappé: he did not hide behind the confusion. His first words were, “I shot my penalty poorly,” a candid acknowledgment that the execution was his responsibility. That level of accountability is part of why he is still regarded as one of the game’s premier leaders.
The good news for France is that the miss did not derail their progress. Les Bleus still defeated Morocco 2-0 to reach the World Cup semifinals, meaning Mbappé’s miss is now just a footnote in a largely successful night. Great players are remembered more for how they respond to adversity than for the occasional mistake, and Mbappé now has another chance to shine on the sport’s biggest stage with a World Cup final berth on the line.
