​Lakers predicted to trade for $50 million generational shooter in Rockets-Kevin Durant three-team blockbuster
The NBA offseason rarely passes without major drama, and this summer has been no exception. Between potential blockbuster trades, free agency speculation, and constant league-wide rumors, several star players have already been linked to possible moves. While much of the attention has focused on LeBron James and his future with the Los Angeles Lakers, another intriguing scenario could involve Los Angeles adding one of the greatest shooters in NBA history.
According to recent speculation, Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson could become a trade candidate if his fit in Dallas does not develop as expected. Thompson, a four-time NBA champion and one of the most accomplished perimeter shooters the league has ever seen, remains a recognizable name despite no longer being in his prime.
Blue Man Hoops’ Peter O’Keefe suggested that Thompson may be better served seeking a trade to a preferred destination rather than pursuing a buyout. However, his contract could complicate matters.
“Thompson should be angling for a trade to a desirable destination rather than a buyout, albeit he holds less control in the former scenario. The complicated aspect is the 4x NBA champion is still set to make $17.5 million next season, and there might not be too many teams eager on him at that price point,” O’Keefe wrote.
That financial element makes any potential Thompson deal more difficult, but the Lakers could be a team motivated to take a swing if they believe his shooting would elevate their offense. Los Angeles has repeatedly searched for reliable floor spacing around its stars, and Thompson’s reputation as a generational shooter would make him an appealing target.
Another major name connected to trade speculation is Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant. Although Durant was acquired to help Houston contend in the Western Conference, there have been questions about whether the Rockets view him as a long-term centerpiece.
NBA insider Brett Siegel reported that Durant may not be considered untouchable in trade discussions.
“Whether or not the Rockets look to continue their partnership with Durant is the big question at large, especially since they don’t view him as an ‘untouchable’ talent in trade talks on their roster. Houston viewed the opportunity to acquire Durant as a way to upgrade from Jalen Green and bridge the gaps in their lineup to contend in the West, but by no means was this addition viewed as a long-term commitment,” Siegel wrote.
That uncertainty has opened the door for trade proposals involving Durant, and one recent idea would reshape three Western Conference teams.
Heavy.com’s Adel Ahmed predicted a potential three-team blockbuster involving the Lakers, Mavericks, and Rockets. In the proposed deal, Los Angeles would acquire Thompson, Dallas would land Durant, and Houston would receive P.J. Washington, Jarred Vanderbilt, Naji Marshall, and two first-round picks.
“In a potential three-team trade idea including the Houston Rockets, the Lakers get their hands on Thompson while the Mavericks land Durant. The Rockets receive P.J. Washington, Jarred Vanderbilt, Naji Marshall and two first round picks,” Ahmed wrote.
For the Lakers, the move would be centered on adding elite shooting without taking on a massive long-term commitment. Thompson is playing on a $50 million contract, and his salary could be easier to manage than a younger star on a max deal. Even if he is no longer the same two-way force he was during his prime with the Golden State Warriors, his ability to stretch defenses would still be valuable alongside Los Angeles’ core.
A Lakers lineup featuring Thompson would immediately improve spacing. Defenders would have to respect his movement off the ball, which could create more driving lanes and cleaner looks for others. Los Angeles has often lacked consistent shooting in key playoff moments, and Thompson’s championship experience would also fit the team’s win-now approach.
For the Mavericks, the prize would be Durant. Pairing Durant with Kyrie Irving would create one of the most talented offensive duos in the league. The two previously played together with the Brooklyn Nets, and while that era did not produce a championship, their scoring ability remains undeniable. Dallas would be betting that Durant’s shot-making could push the franchise closer to title contention.
Houston, meanwhile, would take a different approach. By moving Durant, the Rockets would add multiple rotation players and two first-round picks. P.J. Washington, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Naji Marshall would give Houston defensive versatility, toughness, and lineup flexibility. The draft capital would also provide the Rockets with future trade ammunition or assets to continue building around their younger core.
While this proposed Lakers-Mavericks-Rockets trade would be shocking, it is the type of aggressive move that can define an NBA offseason. The Lakers would land a $50 million sharpshooter in Thompson, the Mavericks would add a future Hall of Famer in Durant, and the Rockets would collect depth and draft picks.
For now, the deal remains speculative. But with the Lakers looking to maximize their roster, the Mavericks trying to remain aggressive, and the Rockets facing questions about Durant’s long-term role, this three-team blockbuster is a scenario worth monitoring.
