LOGAN — The Lancaster football team got in its own way by committing 15 penalties and turning the ball over twice against Logan Friday, Oct. 2.However, the Golden Gales overcame it, thanks to an offensive spark from senior receiver Jack Pompey and running back senior Jahmeir Gordon, and posted their biggest offensive output of the season in a 35-22 Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division win over the host Chieftains. “Anytime you can win, that’s what you work for, but I’m not pleased with how sloppy it was,” Lancaster coach Jeremy McKinney said. “I want to feel better than I do right now, but I am really frustrated with the self-inflicted penalties. It is just mental errors, so I think the next step for us, as a program, is to understand that is what can cost you football games, and that is something that is learned, so we have an opportunity to have some teachable moments. Championship teams don’t act like that, so It’s the next step for us to be where we want to be.”More: H.S. Football Notebook | Area football teams push for playoff contentionWhile all the penalties were frustrating, there were some bright spots, especially from an offense that has struggled most of the season. Pompey and Gordon gave Lancaster the lift they needed. With the Gales leading 14-9, Pompey led an impressive drive to close the first half as the Gales marched 80 yards in the final 1:41. Pompey started the drive off with a 20-yard catch-and-run. He ended up with four catches on the drive. He capped it off with a 16-yard touchdown catch from sophomore quarterback Carter Carlisle, who did a nice job of biding time before finding Pompey in the back of the end zone. That gave the Gales some breathing room at halftime with a 21-9 lead.“We have been so close every week, and it seems like we have been one person away on offense, so it was nice to get a win we really needed,” Pompey said. “As I said, we were so close on so many plays before this game, so it was nice to have everyone execute at a high level.”It was Pompey’s first career touchdown. He ended up with nine receptions for 101 yards. Gordon was equally as impressive. He finished with a season-high 184 yards rushing on 26 carries and three touchdowns.“Pompey is a three-year starter. He is a heck of a baseball player, and they are used to winning, so anytime you can lean on a guy like that who had that much experience in multiple sports, I think that is a good thing,” McKinney said. “He really is a playmaker in space; he’s very smart, has great hands, runs great routes.”Gordon scored on a 13-yard touchdown run in the first half, added a 4-yard scoring run in the third quarter to give the Gales a 28-9 lead, and after the Chieftains cut the lead to 28-16 early in the fourth quarter, Gordon broke loose on a 46-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 35-16 with 7:46 remaining.
