Lavonte David Believes Bucs Will be ‘Animals’ This Season

After unraveling down the stretch in 2025, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers enter 2026 surrounded by questions. Despite a roster stacked with talent, their 2-7 finish to last season has left many wondering whether they can translate that talent into consistent, winning football. Frank Schwab of Yahoo! Sports has expressed doubt, ranking the Buccaneers 22nd in his ongoing offseason power rankings. Yet not everyone shares that skepticism; one notable former Buccaneer believes the 2026 edition of Tampa Bay will be better than many expect.
Lavonte David, who retired this offseason after a 14-year career with Tampa Bay, maintains faith in the team he leaves behind. According to JoeBucsFan.com, David envisions the Buccaneers as “animals” this season. Speaking on Kevin Clark’s This is Football podcast, David offered a glowing endorsement of his former club, saying, “They are going to be some animals, man.” He recalled his connection with Reuben Bain, who was drafted by the Buccaneers and fell to them at pick 15. “I knew Reuben Bain already; I reached out to him after he got drafted. He told me, ‘Man, I wish you just waited one more year.’ And in my mind I was like, ‘Maybe I should have.’ But, you know, the deal is done already. … I told him I’m definitely going to be there to support him and stuff like that.”
So far, Bain has drawn overwhelmingly positive reviews and is expected to become the new face of Tampa Bay’s defense. He aims to prove the teams that let him slip to the Buccaneers at No. 15 look foolish by making an immediate impact. JoeBucsFan also notes that David expects a healthy Bucky Irving and a solid offensive line to make a substantial difference this year. In fact, David is a strong proponent of the entire roster, believing it has every piece it needs to succeed. “The roster is set up beautifully,” he added.
Entering the 2026 season, the Buccaneers carry a significant chip on their shoulder. The brutal finish to 2025 and the questions surrounding the team’s effort have left the faithful seeking reassurance and accountability. There is a sense that Tampa Bay must reestablish trust with its fan base and live up to the legendary standard set by the fearsome defenses that defined the franchise in past eras. David, one of the greatest players to wear the Buccaneers uniform, remains confident that the team will rebound in 2026 and that their offense and defense can deliver a high-powered, balanced attack.
The Buccaneers are undeniably talented and balanced, but talent alone won’t win games. To silence the chatter about last year’s collapse, Tampa Bay must harmonize its strengths and execute at a high level across four quarters. The potential is visible: if Bain, Irving, and the rest of the roster mesh with a healthy offensive line and a stout defense, the 2026 season could restore the confidence that fans hoped to see return after a disappointing 2025 campaign. As the team moves forward, optimism remains tempered by the reality of the tough schedule and the need for consistent play, but the belief voiced by David adds an intriguing note to Tampa Bay’s prospects for the season ahead.
