Lawyers for LSU football player accused of rape maintain his innocence

   ​BATON ROUGE – The LSU football player who has been accused of sexual assault after Title IX investigation is maintaining his innocence in a statement released by his attorneys Oct. 1.East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore’s offense recently opened a criminal investigation last month into the allegations. The original complaint by the LSU student was brought to LSU’s Office of Civil Rights and Title IX back in January.”What has been portrayed on social media and in the news thus far, is not a full account of all of the facts and circumstances surrounding this situation,” lawyers Grant Willis and Morgan Johnson said via a statement. “(Damien Shanklin) looks forward to the day when all information surrounding this incident is brought to light and becomes public knowledge.”LSU PLAYER ACCUSED OF SEXUAL ASSAULT LSU football player accused of sexual assault after Title IX hearing | ReportsLSU ATHLETICS PROJECTS DEFICIT LSU athletics projects $26 million deficit for 2026-27 fiscal yearShanklin, the second-year freshman defensive end, had not previously been publicly identified as the player involved in the alleged incident.Johnson and Willis said that their client would fully cooperate with the district attorney’s criminal investigation and that Shanklin would not have any comment until it has been concluded.”Given this is an ongoing criminal investigation, all facts are not publicly available to not compromise that criminal investigation,” Shanklin’s attorneys said. “We simply ask that the court of public opinion cease to make any assumptions about any person involved until more information is publicly available.”After Moore and his office opened an investigation into the matter on Sept. 22, LSU President Wade Rousse said in a statement that the university was taking the allegations “very seriously” and said that LSU would be fully cooperating with the police’s investigation.”Safety and security must be our number one priority,” Rousse said via a statement. “Let me assure everyone that this incident has been handled professionally and that LSU has strictly followed our policies, procedures and best practices, including the Title IX process to guide our actions to date.”Now that a criminal complaint has been filed, our role is to continue cooperating with our law enforcement partners as they work through their investigatory process.”In January, the LSU student filed a Title IX complaint. She and Shanklin provided conflicting accounts of what took place in a dormitory on campus Oct. 18, 2025, most notably if there was consent of sexual acts. LSU’s Title IX office first received an incident report Dec. 9.Title IX investigators documented that both parties said there was some consensual activity, but the student said during interviews that she did not agree to intercourse, which continued even after she told him to stop.
