Lazio ‘Very Close’ to Reaching Club-To-Club Agreement for €12M Defender

Lazio is poised to seal a deal with Dinamo Zagreb for the signing of Sergi Dominguez, according to reports. In recent days, the Biancocelesti confirmed AC Milan’s €30 million bid for Mario Gila. The 25-year-old isn’t the only defender to depart Formello this summer, as Ivan Provedel has already completed his move to Inter Milan, while Alessio Romagnoli has traveled to Doha to join Al-Sadd. With these exits, Lazio faces the need to add at least one new center-back to join Oliver Provstgaard, Patric, and Samuel Gigot in Gennaro Gattuso’s squad.
Over the past several weeks, Dominguez has emerged as Lazio’s top target, particularly after his impressive first season with Dinamo Zagreb, where he helped the Croatian champions secure a domestic double. On Thursday morning, Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani was seen in Split for direct talks with Dinamo Zagreb officials. The initial day of discussions reportedly went well, with Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio noting that the two clubs are “very close” to finalizing a deal for the defender, who is valued at around €12 million. This valuation could align with Lazio’s bidding stance, as Dinamo Zagreb had initially hoped to command €15 million while Lazio’s initial offer stood at €10 million.
If everything progresses as planned, Dominguez could travel to Rome in the coming days to step in for Gila. Like his compatriot Gila, Dominguez was born outside his native country—though Dominguez is a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, whereas Gila rose through Real Madrid’s ranks. This season, Dominguez made 41 appearances across all competitions for Dinamo Zagreb, highlighting his versatility and attacking contribution by scoring two goals and providing four assists to his teammates. Dominguez’s style and experience in domestic and continental competitions make him a compelling option for Lazio as they seek to reinforce their defense and add depth to Gattuso’s backline.
Lazio’s pursuit of Dominguez reflects a broader strategy to refresh the squad after key departures and to ensure robust competition for the center-back positions. If the transfer materializes, Dominguez would join a defensive corps currently featuring Provstgaard, Patric, and Gigot, with Gattuso aiming to bolster the solidity and balance of his reconstituted defense. The transfer dynamics indicate Lazio’s willingness to invest in a young, dynamic center-back who can adapt to Serie A’s demands and contribute both defensively and in building play from the back. Dominguez’s arrival would reportedly help Lazio address their current defensive gaps and provide a long-term option in central defense, aligning with the club’s ambitions for domestic success and continued progress in European competition.
