Lazio’s Offer for Spanish Defender Falls Short as Spurs Could Re-Enter the Race

Lazio remain eager to add Spanish youngster Sergi Dominguez to their ranks, but so far their efforts have fallen short of meeting Dinamo Zagreb’s asking price. The Biancocelesti have identified the 21-year-old as the ideal successor to his compatriot Mario Gila, who recently joined AC Milan earlier this week. Dominguez, a product of Barcelona’s academy, moved to Dinamo Zagreb last summer and enjoyed an impressive debut campaign in Croatia, playing a key role in helping the club clinch the domestic double.
On Thursday, Lazio’s Sporting Director Angelo Fabiani traveled to Croatia to conduct face-to-face talks with Dinamo officials, but he returned without an agreement. His offer did not persuade the Croatian club to part ways with their prized asset. Sky Sport Italia’s Manuele Baiocchini reported that Lazio proposed an initial loan deal worth €3.5 million, plus an option to buy for a further €8 million. Dinamo Zagreb, however, have raised their asking price to €15 million, leaving a substantial gap between the two clubs.
Meanwhile, Il Corriere della Sera, via La Lazio Siamo Noi, has warned Lazio about Tottenham Hotspur revisiting the pursuit of Dominguez. Tottenham had Dominguez on their radar early on, but subsequently redirected their attention to overhauling their midfield, bringing in Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. Nevertheless, after selling Radu Dragusin to Fiorentina, Spurs could decide to mount a concrete bid for the Spanish defender, and they possess the financial power to outbid Lazio.
This scenario wouldn’t be the first time Lazio have missed out on a leading target despite starting as frontrunners. They have previously allowed Deportivo La Coruña to snatch Jonathan Asp Jensen, missing out on a player they had appeared positioned to sign. The current pursuit of Dominguez underscores a familiar pattern for Lazio, where initial momentum does not always translate into a completed deal.
As the transfer window progresses, Lazio face the challenge of narrowing the gap with Dinamo Zagreb over Dominguez’s valuation, while also contending with the renewed threat from Tottenham. The Italian club will need to weigh their strategy carefully, weighing the risk of overpaying against the strategic value of securing a player who could become a long-term cornerstone of their defense. Dominguez’s development at Dinamo Zagreb, combined with his potential adaptability within Lazio’s system, continues to make him an appealing option, but the financial realities of the negotiation will determine whether this pursuit moves from interest to signing.
