LeBron James’ Free Agency Could Be Holding Up Lakers’ Jonathan Kuminga Move: Report

By admin — In News — July 12, 2026

The NBA world is buzzing as fans eagerly anticipate LeBron James’s decision for the 2026-27 season. With every passing day and the King’s continued radio silence, LBJ’s supporters grow more anxious about what he will decide. Meanwhile, a rising NBA star appears to be closely watching James’s moves, with his own future potentially hinging on what James chooses to do (and what he doesn’t). During Bleacher Report’s Summer League coverage this past Saturday, insider Jake Fischer explained that Jonathan Kuminga’s fate next season could depend on whether James makes a blockbuster announcement. “He seems more likely than not to be departing the Hawks by way of sign-and-trade. That could be something that happens to Cleveland if the Cavaliers don’t get LeBron James. So, his dynamic is a bit on pause and on hold while LeBron’s future is determined,” Fischer said. He also noted that Kuminga could have already become a Laker if the 23-year-old forward had been more receptive to Los Angeles’s vision.
Kuminga had endured a few underwhelming seasons with the Golden State Warriors, but he showed a renewed pep this past season after being traded to Atlanta. Yet the Hawks ultimately declined his $24.3 million team option by the end of June, making him an unrestricted free agent. If the Cavaliers fail to land James, it’s plausible they would pursue Kuminga, which would complicate the Lakers’ path to adding him. While Los Angeles currently has roughly $10 million to offer, Cleveland could create additional cap space for Kuminga by unloading the contracts of Max Strus and Dennis Schroder and potentially signing James Harden to a three-year deal rather than a two-year commitment.
Fischer’s sign-and-trade scenario isn’t the only angle shaping Kuminga’s market. Lakers beat reporter Khobi Price outlined a plan suggesting the Hawks are seriously weighing a sign-and-trade that would send Kuminga to the Lakers in exchange for Jarred Vanderbilt and a 2032 first-round pick swap. Price added that this route could enable Kuminga to secure a higher salary than the Lakers could offer as an unrestricted free agent, making the move appealing from Kuminga’s perspective.
As rumors swirl, the NBA landscape remains highly fluid, with leverage and timing playing pivotal roles. The prospect of a sign-and-trade involving Kuminga, the Lakers, the Hawks, and possibly the Cavaliers underscores how interconnected teams’ futures have become in this off-season. For now, all eyes will stay fixed on LeBron James’s looming decision, while Kuminga’s camp weighs options that could either accelerate or delay his next chapter depending on where James lands.
