Lewis Hamilton reckons it makes no sense to shorten races as F1 will do in 2027, as he along with other drivers weigh in on Monaco being sprint. To help with the power unit and the battery, F1 has decided to cut races from 305 km to 290 km distance, which is a cut of about two to three laps from 2027 season onward. The F1 Commission agreed to the change, which is a formality now to be ratified by FIA World Motor Sport Council. It is a major change made to a F1 race after decades of same distance. The sport’s experienced campaigner Ferrari’s Hamilton is not too happy with the change. The Brit admits that he is not certain why exactly the change has been made, but he feels it is not the change they need.Considering F1 is a physical sport, he thinks the races should remain as it is. The current cars have already made things less demanding, especially on the body unlike the previous generation of cars. He wants the athletes right on the edge at all times, rather than few odd races.Hamilton Says Shortening F1 Races Makes No SenseSpanish Grand Prix, Sunday Madrid: Motorsport: FIA F1 Grand Prix of Spain, Formula 1 2026 on September, 13, 2026, (Photo by Hoch Zwei)“I don’t really know anything about it or any of the reasons they put behind it,” said Hamilton to media in F1 Azerbaijan GP. “I mean I think the races should be longer because the races are physically easier than ever before. So shortening I don’t think makes much sense. If you think about this weekend we have the C3, C4, C5 that can pretty much all do the race distance.“So we have a lot of races where it’s only a one-stop. It’s not particularly challenging. It is challenging, but they’re making tyres that just seem to go longer, so for me there’s been many races where I wish we had more laps. So it’s the opposite that I would be asking for is longer races to be honest.“I mean this is supposed to be the sport that’s the most physically demanding, mentally and physically, and there are some that are just so hot and ultimately you are on the edge, like Singapore is incredibly hot and demanding. Malaysia will be crazy this year.“But that’s where I think you want to see athletes just right on the edge, right the edge of their performance, having to actually push their bodies further because that’s what this sport is about, pushing the levels and pushing the boundaries. So shortening the races makes absolutely no sense to me,” summed up Hamilton.Hamilton Reckons Monaco Needs Some Different Change Than F1 SprintMONTE-CARLO, MONACO – JUNE 06: Max Verstappen of the Netherlands driving the (3) Oracle Red Bull Racing RB22 Red Bull Ford Liam Lawson of New Zealand driving the (30) Visa Cash App Racing Bulls VCARB 03 RB Ford and George Russell of Great Britain driving the (63) Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team W17 in the Pitlane during final practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Monaco at Circuit de Monaco on June 06, 2026 in Monte-Carlo, Monaco.
