ELKHART — Fans and spectators gathered at the Elkhart Public Library’s downtown branch to watch the U.S. Men’s national soccer team’s 4-1 loss to Belgium on a large screen Monday. Trevor Wendzonka, the library’s chief marketing officer, explained that an outdoor curbside concert featuring Paul Erdman had been planned for Friday but was moved indoors because of rain. “Some of the elements we hoped to include as part of downtown Elkhart’s America 250 celebration had to be put on hold,” Wendzonka said. “With that in mind, we pulled together another type of community event. We haven’t done a lot with soccer or sports in the past, but this felt like a perfect way to bring people together, have a little Monday night fun, and root for Team USA in hopes of a win.”
The watch party featured several special touches before kickoff. Local musician Jim Catalano performed on a rope drum with a colonial flair, adding a unique soundtrack to the evening. The library also borrowed a large American flag from Federated Media, which was draped along the side of the downtown branch building to mark the occasion.
Wendzonka emphasized that the library’s goal was to create lasting memories for attendees. “This is a special moment,” he said. “The World Cup’s showcase of world-class talent has a way of bringing communities together, and being part of that moment is meaningful for us. It’s fun for our staff, and we’re enjoying the experience tonight.”
Attendee Lawrence Culbreath, who used to live in the area and now resides in Alabama, said the party’s atmosphere was welcoming and not overly crowded. He learned about the event through Facebook while visiting family in Elkhart. “It’s a World Cup night, and I’m rooting for the USA,” Culbreath said, noting that the gathering gave a chance to reconnect with the community.
Another World Cup watch event occurred at Westwind Brewery Co., located at 911 Plum St., on Monday evening, offering another venue for fans to come together and cheer on Team USA.
Miguel Ramirez, a local resident who attended the downtown library watch party with his wife, said they originally intended to watch the game at home after spotting the big screen on their way from Sherman Street. Instead, they joined the crowd at the library to share the experience with fellow soccer enthusiasts, underscoring how communal gatherings can amplify the excitement of major matches and foster a sense of neighborhood connection. As fans looked on, the day’s events underscored Elkhart’s ongoing efforts to enhance community engagement through sports, culture, and public programming.
