Ahead of Sunday’s training camp practice, Lions head coach Dan Campbell said that Detroit won’t play starting quarterback Jared Goff in its preseason opener at the Cincinnati Bengals. The Lions open their NFL preseason slate at the Bengals on Thursday, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. ET from Paycor Stadium.”No, I don’t see Goff playing. Even if we didn’t have a quarterback, Goff’s not playing. We’ll just roll out… I don’t know, give me a name. You know what? We’ll put Tom Kennedy at quarterback. We’ll do that in a heartbeat. He’ll run the whole show for the game. But no, so I don’t see Goff playing. Certainly (Luke) Altmyer is going to take a heavy load and then anybody else we get, we’ll get them up to speed as fast as we can and give them some reps,” Campbell said. The Lions announced on Sunday afternoon that backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was stepping away from the team. Reports broke later on Sunday that the Lions were reportedly signing veteran quarterback Josh Dobbs.Luke Altmyer, an undrafted free agent signing out of Illinois, figures to get a heavy dose of the workload this coming Thursday. Altmyer threw for 3,007 yards and 22 touchdowns last season at Illinois. The 6-foot-1, 213-pound quarterback passed for 7,924 yards and 60 touchdowns in his collegiate career. It doesn’t sound like many starters will see the field in the Lions’ preseason opener.”I really don’t see playing a lot of our guys. We’ll play some of them. We’ll play some of our guys that are in these (competitions). We’ve got some competitions going on at spots, but you asked about Goff. I don’t see Goff playing, and we’ll kind of gauge it as we go here.”I think more of mine is the questions will be coming next week. When we start getting into the Washington week, because that was kind of where I always targeted like, alright, this may be where we need to play our guys. That’ll be the first one. That’s kind of where I was thinking,” Campbell said. For more Lions coverage, follow us on X, @TheLionsWire, and give our Facebook page a like.
