Liverpool have a huge problem on their hands, it could ruin their title hopes

Liverpool still has a lot to sort out before the 2026-27 season begins. At the moment, they’ve signed only one player this summer, which is well below ideal for a club aiming to compete at the top and push for major honors. There are several positions across the squad that could benefit from fresh additions after last season’s uneven results. Without new faces, it’s hard to see how the Anfield club can improve its performance, climb higher in the table, or challenge for the Premier League title.
Meanwhile, plenty of transfer chatter is swirling, but the latest developments could complicate the Reds’ plans for the near future. Tottenham Hotspur have already been among the most active clubs in the division this summer, spending well over £200 million on new arrivals after narrowly avoiding relegation last season. It’s clear Spurs want to avoid a repeat of last year’s troubles, and they appear to be undergoing a significant squad refresh. This has sparked links with a range of players, including Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo.
Although talk of Gakpo’s future has cooled somewhat, a recent update from Fabrizio Romano suggests this could be the closest he has come to leaving Anfield. “There are no negotiations between Tottenham and his agent regarding Rafa Leao, nor between Tottenham and Milan,” Romano stated on his YouTube channel. Since Harry Kane’s departure, Spurs have struggled to rediscover their best form. They did win the Europa League in the 2024-25 season, but that success felt more like a stroke of luck than a sign of lasting momentum. A string of injuries over the past few years has contributed to their decline, and without a potent attack, it’s difficult for any team to consistently gather three points on the road to silverware.
Gakpo’s proven Premier League experience and his important role for Liverpool since his arrival in 2023 make him an appealing target for Tottenham, and the club’s willingness to spend suggests they could pursue him. Savinho from Manchester City is another option on Spurs’ radar, and with their appetite for investment, the possibility of signing both players cannot be dismissed. If Gakpo’s form dipped again last season, some fans would accept his departure more easily, but Liverpool would face a serious setback in their title ambitions if they do not adequately replace him.
All in all, Andoni Iraola and Richard Hughes face a crucial task: either keep Gakpo at Liverpool or pursue one or two capable replacements to fill the gap and maintain competing momentum. The season ahead hinges on smart recruitment, tactical balance, and preserving the depth needed to overturn last year’s inconsistencies. Fans will be hoping for decisive moves that strengthen the squad, boost attacking options, and help Liverpool close the gap to the top contenders while keeping the door open for a genuine title challenge.
