Liverpool transfer news: Generational duo are finally coming to Reds

Richard Hughes has pulled off a masterstroke, hinting at a dazzling double move that could soon land in Liverpool. The club’s current sporting director may not stay long in his role, with Al Hilal reportedly his likely destination after the summer, yet that should not diminish the appreciation for Hughes’ work. Last summer, he orchestrated what looked like a largely successful transfer window for Liverpool, and there is still a strong case that it could prove fruitful in the long run.
Hughes brought in exceptionally bright young talents who are likely to form the backbone of Andoni Iraola’s team going forward. While last season may have felt like a disappointment given Liverpool’s hefty spending, it’s worth remembering that most transfers need more than a single campaign to be properly assessed. That said, Hughes is not without pressure at the moment. This transfer window has not quite delivered the jaw-dropping impact many fans anticipated, and there is still time for changes. But compared with this stage last year, Liverpool’s rhythm has been noticeably quieter. A year ago, the club was making headlines with the arrivals of Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez, and Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak were also tipped as potential arrivals to Anfield.
There was genuine excitement and a sense of momentum around the club, so it’s little wonder supporters expected another aggressive spree in the market. Instead, Liverpool now appear poised to miss out on Yan Diomande. The latest reports indicate the highly-rated Ivorian may prefer a move to Paris Saint-Germain, leaving the Reds scrambling for an alternative option. Perhaps that is simply a reflection of Liverpool’s current realities. The club remains focused on long-term planning, and Diomande felt like a signing that fit perfectly with the recruitment model. He wouldn’t have been an instant Salah successor, but he carried all the traits needed to develop into one of Europe’s top forwards. Missing out on him is understandably frustrating.
There aren’t many players with that profile available, especially when it comes to natural right-wing options. Finding someone capable of eventually stepping into Salah’s shoes is among the toughest challenges in modern football, and the pool of viable candidates is indeed quite limited. If Diomande ends up in Paris, Liverpool’s recruitment team will need to devise another plan—and that won’t be easy.
But it’s also important to keep perspective: Liverpool aren’t in a dire situation. Hughes has still done significant work to position this summer for success. Much of the groundwork was laid months in advance. In January, Hughes pulled off two signings—Jeremy Jacquet and Ifeanyi Ndukwe—that Liverpool fans have had to wait for. Jacquet’s move was delayed as Rennes wanted to retain the talented 20-year-old, while Ndukwe could only join once he turned 18, in line with FIFA regulations. At a time when Liverpool needed a centre-back, landing these two players for a more robust squad profile made clear strategic sense.
