Read More As NRG Stadium edges toward its 25th football season, changes are unfolding. The Houston Texans have announced a new practice facility near Bridgeland, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo revealed a new one-million-square-foot agricultural complex near Highway 288. So what lies ahead for the iconic venue? The Texans say they are committed to keeping NRG Stadium among the NFL’s best and plan to stay, while also developing the Toro District in Bridgeland, which will feature new offices, practice facilities, and retail to attract fans. The Rodeo’s plan for a sprawling complex that includes an arena, barns, and educational spaces addresses space needs, but it raises the question of whether both organizations will eventually build new homes elsewhere.
Former Harris County Judge Robert Eckels, who helped design and build NRG, notes that NRG is a state-of-the-art facility, but markets and teams evolve over time. He suggests that as the Texans and the Rodeo grow, they will seek additional facilities to meet changing needs, while the core football games and Rodeo events may be difficult to outgrow. The lingering question remains: what will become of the Astrodome? Despite discussions and studies, its fate remains uncertain as it continues to sit at the crossroads of past and future plans for Houston’s major venues.  Feedzy
