Luka Doncic Sends a Clear Message to the Lakers About Roster Moves They Can’t Ignore, originally reported by The Sporting News. The Sporting News Preferred Source. The Los Angeles Lakers kicked off the offseason with a flurry of roster changes, starting by extending Austin Reaves for four years and $185 million, then adding Walker Kessler, Collin Sexton, Quentin Grimes, and Sandro Mamukelashvili to their revamped lineup. Following the Lakers’ busy day, their star point guard signaled a message the franchise can’t overlook. According to league sources cited by The Athletic’s Dan Woike, Doncic was “excited” about the Lakers’ signings, noting that the team addressed his top roster desires by retaining Reaves and acquiring a dynamic, elite rim-protecting center in Kessler. It’s well known that Doncic wanted Reaves to remain in Los Angeles and for the Lakers to land a two-way center with substantial motor. The 27-year-old former Dallas Mavs superstar reportedly didn’t want the Lakers to sacrifice Reaves in a potential Giannis Antetokounmpo blockbuster, underscoring how highly he values his undrafted teammate. On the centers front, Kessler and Jalen Duren were the Lakers’ top targets. While initial signs suggested they might miss out on both, Rob Pelinka silenced doubters by securing Kessler in a blockbuster sign-and-trade, even though it required a hefty haul to Utah that will impact financial flexibility later. It should be thrilling to watch Kessler and Doncic link up in transition and in the pick-and-roll, along with Kessler’s high-level rim protection (he averaged 14.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game in an injury-shortened 2025-26 season). If Doncic is satisfied with the Lakers’ offseason, it’s a clear indication the franchise is on the right track toward title contention.
