​As a menacing middle linebacker, Luke Kuechly often had the answers to the opposition’s game plan thanks to his meticulous studying and note-taking.It’s a trait that portends well for his career as a broadcaster.The former Carolina Panthers captain and 2013 Defensive Player of the Year, Kuechly will be Netflix’s primary game analyst for the streaming service’s five NFL games it airs this year. Noah Eagle returns as the play-by-play announcer and MJ Acosta is the sideline reporter. The trio’s first assignment will be the first-ever game in Australia on Thursday, Sept. 10 between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers.First on Kuechly’s travel schedule, though, is a trip to Canton, Ohio for his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In eight professional seasons, Kuechly was named first-team All-Pro five times (and to the second-team twice).His notebooks filled with the Panthers’ defensive plays, opponent tendencies and reminders for himself became legendary.”One of my favorite parts of the game was the preparation side of it,” Kuechly told Panthers.com.Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator from 2016-18 and had to face Kuechly twice a season as a rival in the NFC South. Monken called the 2012 Defensive Rookie of the Year “one of the all-time greats.””Luke Kuechly was a complete pain in the (expletive),” Monken told reporters July 31. “Calling out what you’re doing in your checks – he listened to the (broadcast) audio and pointed out, ‘They’re going right!’ – and most of the time he’s right. Every now and then he (was) wrong, but that guy was fantastic.”One aspect of preparation Kuechly prioritized was watching the first halves of an upcoming opponent. Because, he said, that was the clearest indication of what the unit wanted to do.  “The notebook allowed me to write everything down,” Kuechly told Panthers.com. “If I write stuff down, I remember it way better. And sometimes I write it down multiple times, so in some of those notebooks you’ll see the same thing written multiple times because if I write it down once I’ll forget, so I’ve got to write it down multiple times.””Those notebooks, I had a million of them. I still have all of them with me, and they had all of my notes, all of my thoughts.”Now instead of offenses he’s looking to punish, Kuechly’s notebooks will have information about the two teams he is going to discuss for three-plus hours over the course of a game.
