Mac Jones’ blunt description of Tom Brady interaction in Patriots-Bucs

Mac Jones has taken the field in numerous high-stakes football games, including the 2021 national championship at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Yet nothing matched the electric atmosphere of Gillette Stadium when Tom Brady returned to face the New England Patriots as the quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The date was October 3, 2021.
As a rookie quarterback stepping into the role for one of the league’s venerable franchises, Jones carried the weight of lofty expectations. Even so, the storyline of that highly anticipated matchup centered on Brady and Patriots coach Bill Belichick, and who deserved more credit for the NFL’s defining dynasty. It was the ultimate collision: the greatest quarterback of all time against the greatest coach, a heavyweight clash of two living legends.
Jones approached it with the eyes of a rookie who had nothing to lose. “That was lit. That was awesome because they were calling it ‘the game of the century.’ I just feel like the lead-up was really cool,” he recalled on Bussin’ With The Boys. “It was a night game, sold out. Tickets were going for four or five thousand dollars, whatever. Everybody was hyping it in the media.” He admitted to trying to stay away from social media during the season, but acknowledged the pervasive focus on Brady—the recurring storyline of the moment: Tom Brady versus Tom Brady in a sense, with the “Tom” fixation dominating the coverage.
“I try to stay off social media during the season and stuff. So you know, it’s all about Tom, Tom and Tom. And I’m like, ‘[Expletive], I’ve got nothing to lose here. I’m just going to go out there and sling it.’ And I did. I played decently well in that stadium. That was the most electric stadium I’ve been in because it was a good game, back and forth. They ended up scoring late or whatever. We really could have won.”
The Buccaneers, then reigning Super Bowl champions, emerged victorious 19-17 in a game that kept fans riveted to the action until the final moments. Brady completed 22 of 43 passes for 269 yards, while Jones went 31 of 40 for 275 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. The night concluded with Nick Foles missing a 56-yard field goal attempt in the rain, sealing the Buccaneers’ slim win.
When asked whether he had any notable exchanges with Brady during the contest, Jones offered a candid, rookie-minded response befitting the moment. “He stared at me, I don’t know,” he said with a laugh.
This account captures the intensity and spectacle of that autumn showdown, a game that remains a defining memory for Jones as he looked on, learning from one of the game’s most iconic figures. The veteran presence, the rivalry, and the roar of the Gillette crowd created a backdrop that underscored the high-stakes narrative: a young quarterback facing a historic dynasty, and a legend acknowledging the challenge at the highest level.
