Madison graduate Sweeney to lead Gulf Coast State College men’s basketball team

Adam Sweeney hasn’t forgotten his Madison roots. The 2011 graduate played varsity sports for the Blue Streaks before moving on to Division I basketball and eventually serving as an assistant coach at several colleges. Now he is poised to lead his own program as he takes over as the men’s basketball coach at Gulf Coast State College in Panama City, Florida.
“During high school, I knew I wanted to become a basketball coach,” Sweeney said. He credits his high school coach Pat Moran for showing him what innovation looked like long before it became common in the sport. “Looking back, you wanted the three-point shot, layups, and free throws, and Coach Moran was ahead of his time,” Sweeney added. “We’re talking about 15 years ago. He was teaching us things that wouldn’t become mainstream in basketball for another decade. He was a solid example.”
Sweeney’s basketball journey has been rich and varied. He joins Gulf Coast State College after two seasons as an assistant coach at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. Before that, he served two separate stints as the top assistant at Northwest Florida State College, where he helped guide the program to a standout 117-22 record, multiple conference and regional titles, and a 2023 national runner-up finish. He also spent the 2021-2022 season as an assistant coach at New Mexico Junior College.
At Gardner-Webb, Sweeney completed his undergraduate degree in mathematics in 2015. After earning his degree, he stayed on as a graduate assistant for two seasons, then completed his master’s in sport pedagogy in 2017. He even played basketball for the Bulldogs during his time there. “I tried to be a Division I basketball player,” he said. “It’s not easy walking on. If I wanted to be part of the team, I’d have had to be a student-manager through the end of the season in 2011.” He earned a spot on the squad the following season, appearing in 12 games over the next two years, an experience he regards as formative.
The Commodores compete in the Panhandle Conference of the Florida State College Activities Association, a division within the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 8. “I got to go against so many good coaches and observe what they do,” Sweeney explained. “How they adjust, how they counter, and their attention to detail. I loved the development that comes with college basketball. You live and eat together, and I’m fortunate to have had coaches at Gardner-Webb who believed I could do this.”
One such mentor was Moran, who is thrilled about Sweeney’s latest step. “Adam always showed the characteristics of a coach from a young age,” Moran noted. “As a player, he was the coach on the floor during games and in practice.” Moran believes the move is a significant and positive development for Madison athletics. “It’s always a feather in your cap when someone you teach or coach goes on to become a teacher or coach,” he said.
Last season, Gulf Coast State College posted a 28-7 record and advanced to the FCS, a sign of the program’s competitive trajectory. As Sweeney steps into his new role, his blend of playing experience, classroom study, and coaching success at multiple levels positions him to guide Gulf Coast State College toward continued growth and achievement.
