Major Reasons Revealed For CM Punk’s Shocking WWE Title Win

By admin — In News — July 10, 2026

WWE pulled off a surprising title change on Raw this week as CM Punk defeated Sami Zayn to become the WWE World Champion. Zayn’s reign lasted a mere nine days, ending when Punk dethroned him and stepped into the role as the challenger to Cody Rhodes. Punk captured the title in his hometown of Chicago, and many believe he is positioned for a main event slot at one of the SummerSlam nights.
According to top wrestling insider Sean Ross Sapp and the Fightful site, NBCUniversal is pushing Punk to have a prominent place on SmackDown as the champion. Fightful Select reported that Punk is expected to enjoy a lengthy reign primarily on SmackDown, with NBCU viewing him as a premier star and aiming for him to carry the brand forward. While Punk will still appear on Raw when necessary, the widespread plan is to spotlight him on SmackDown, with the network’s influence helping move him from Raw to the blue brand. Fightful noted that Punk is slated to be the face of SmackDown for the foreseeable future. Even though that would create some friction with the brand split, the report says Raw will also feature Punk as needed.
The other side of the story centers on Sami Zayn and the short-lived peak of his title run. Zayn cemented several viral moments celebrating his victory, including a recent video in which he vented in anger and hurled insults at Punk. Veteran insider Dave Meltzer later commented that Zayn was never positioned for a long run as champion, suggesting WWE did not view him as a top tier star. As Meltzer put it, the real question wasn’t whether Zayn would hold the belt for nine days or a few weeks, but whether he would have a longer run at all. He implied that the WWE profits and visibility lie with a small group of “money players,” and Zayn wasn’t perceived as being in that echelon, despite his earlier momentum.
Zayn’s reign appeared to be a bridge strategy—mostly designed to set up Cody Rhodes’s departure from the title and to pave the way for Punk’s long-term hold. The prevailing expectation among many is that Rhodes will challenge Punk for the title at SummerSlam, potentially as one of the event’s main events. WWE’s aim seemed to be to overhaul the title picture and craft a fresh storyline without forcing a Punk-Rhodes confrontation before the PPV. Fightful’s update on Punk’s anticipated lengthy reign reinforces the likelihood that Punk will retain against Rhodes, at least in the immediate aftermath of the title change.
Some fans have even speculated about a heel turn for Punk after he paid tribute to the late Hulk Hogan with aggressive gestures following the title win. Whether Punk’s portrayal shifts further in that direction remains to be seen, but the current trajectory suggests a longer run at the top for Punk and a SmackDown-centric consolidation of his championship presence.
