Malik Howard, a 2027 Tennessee football commit, is entering his senior season at Oak Ridge High School in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Speaking at KFOA media day on Friday, the four-star standout opened up about his decision to commit to the University of Tennessee with Vols Wire, explaining that the choice was rooted in trust and a shared championship mindset with the Vols coaching staff.
“I just came to the conclusion that I could trust this coaching staff more than I could trust the other staffs,” Howard said. “I want to play for them and win championships together.” The commitment to Tennessee came over offers from Notre Dame, Oregon, and Alabama, among others. Howard’s recruitment also included Power Five scholarship offers from a broad list of programs, including Kentucky, Indiana, Vanderbilt, Louisville, Miami, Florida State, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Duke, Maryland, Purdue, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Florida, Syracuse, Michigan, Missouri, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Arkansas, Colorado, Auburn, LSU, Northwestern, and West Virginia. Kentucky was the first to offer him on May 23, 2024, with Tennessee following on June 5, 2024.
As a junior in 2025, Howard produced an impressive stat line, recording 53 receptions for 778 yards and 11 touchdowns. Looking ahead to the 2027 season, he expressed relief that his lengthy recruiting process has finally concluded, emphasizing a focus on unfinished business at Oak Ridge.
“We have some unfinished business here,” Howard said. “We want to win state, and if we play our game, I don’t think there’s a 6A team that can beat us.” Oak Ridge’s 2025 campaign finished with a 9-2 record, but the Wildcats dropped their last two games to Maryville High School in Maryville and Science Hill High School in Johnson City, respectively, as they made a push for a deeper playoff run.
In the broader context of the 2025 season and the surrounding playoff landscape, highlights included Science Hill’s Hayden Smith colliding with Oak Ridge’s Malik Howard during a TSSAA football playoff matchup in Oak Ridge on November 6, 2025. The competitive clash underscored the level of talent on both teams as they navigated the postseason.
