Man City 2026 World Cup Watch: Rodri helps Spain into mouth-watering last-16 clash

By admin — In yahoo — July 2, 2026

Rodri played the full 90 minutes as Spain cruised past Austria 3-0 to book a spot in the World Cup last-16. The European champions dominated the game, overcoming a tight opening period in which Marc Cucurella had a goal ruled out for a Pau Cubarsí foul on the keeper. The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when Mikel Oyarzabal swept home from a Cucurella cross. Goalie Alexander Schlager produced a string of standout saves before the break, including palming a Baena free-kick onto the bar, but Spain carried the attack into the second half.
Pedro Porro made it 2-0 in the 66th minute, charging into the box to head Baena’s cross home. Then, in the 89th minute, Cucurella again provided the assist, threading a perfect through-ball to Oyarzabal, who calmly slotted home his second of the night and fourth of the tournament. Austria, making their first knockout appearance since 1954, could only muster a lone off-target header from Sasa Kalajdžić.
Spain remain unbeaten in their first four matches, alongside Mexico, as the only teams yet to concede. The result sets up a tantalizing last-16 clash for La Roja, who will meet either Portugal or Croatia after their own round-of-16 tie. Rodri’s performance included 108 touches—the most of any player—along with 85 accurate passes at 92% and six recoveries. He also registered six ball recoveries, five ground duels won, five tackles, two accurate long balls, two clearances, two interceptions, two chances created, one pass into the final third, one foul won, one aerial duel won, one headed clearance, and one touch in the opposition box.
