Man Utd can be thankful Carrick is in charge

In the immediate wake of Ruben Amorim’s dismissal in January, Manchester United signaled that their search for a new manager would be expansive, likely drawing on candidates tied to nations competing at the World Cup. Yet a well-placed source quickly warned that such an approach was impractical, especially if it involved managers from countries expected to enjoy a prolonged run in the tournament. The logic was simple: managers could not risk the inevitable backlash that would follow if they committed to another job after the World Cup, a move that would shift focus away from the task at hand. And beyond that, the ultimate reality would be dictated by results, determining whether any particular manager had succeeded or faltered.
Among the names most frequently mentioned in connection with the United job were Carlo Ancelotti, Julian Nagelsmann, and Thomas Tuchel. Yet none of that trio has enhanced their standing in the United States this summer. If Tuchel had been preparing to assume control at Old Trafford in the wake of the fallout from his perceived tactical missteps against Argentina, the German tactician would have found himself on the back foot from day one.
There was considerable debate about whether Michael Carrick should have been handed the role—by all accounts, his results made him a clear and obvious choice. But as he heads to Helsinki for United’s first pre-season match against Wrexham on Saturday, the club’s hierarchy can at least take some reassurance from the fact that they are beginning from a solid, stable base. The decision-making process underscored a broader strategic objective: find a manager who can not only navigate the immediate post-season landscape but also build a durable foundation that can withstand the scrutiny and pressures that come with top-level football in the years ahead.
