Suthar’s county stint came on the back of a sensational Test debut for India. He picked up 6/33 in the first innings against Afghanistan and added another wicket in the second, earning the Player of the Match award as India registered their biggest Test win and announcing himself as the 319th player to represent the country in the format.
Warwickshire moved quickly to secure his services on the strength of that performance. Performance director James Thomas explained the thinking behind the signing when the deal was confirmed.
“We’re delighted to welcome Manav to the Bears, at a really exciting time for the team. We’ve played some good red-ball cricket already this season, and Manav will bring a new aspect to our bowling attack. It shows how highly he’s rated in India after his selection to their Test team last week,” Thomas said.
Manav Suthar repays Warwickshire’s faith
Suthar had set himself the goal of contributing to Warwickshire’s title charge, and his performances across both matches did exactly that. He took three wickets on debut against Yorkshire in Scarborough before the Somerset five-for, finishing his short stint with the Bears in style.
“I’m incredibly excited to be joining Warwickshire for the next two County Championship games. The team has started the season very well, so I’m hoping that I can play a part in helping them in their push for the title,” Suthar said when the move was announced.
