Manchester United, Chelsea agree £50m Andrey Santos transfer — report

Andrey Santos is poised to move to Manchester United from Chelsea after the clubs reportedly agreed a transfer worth £50 million, aligning with Chelsea’s previously reported asking price. According to The Athletic, £48 million would be paid up front, with a further £2 million to be disbursed upon the achievement of “easily achievable bonuses.” Chelsea will also retain a 10 percent sell-on clause should Santos later command a higher transfer fee.
Last season, Santos was a regular in Chelsea’s squad following a loan at sister club RC Strasbourg, but he apparently wishes to secure a regular starting role. He appears to believe that would be more feasible at United, where Moisés Caicedo is not in question for the foreseeable future at Chelsea due to his long-term commitment, and Enzo Fernández could also remain after the transfer turmoil surrounding him. While Santos may be correct in believing he could find consistent minutes at Old Trafford, it’s unlikely his plan comes with guaranteed starting opportunities, even with Casemiro potentially departing. The arrival of another midfielder from Atalanta, Éderson, is also on the horizon, which could further complicate his path to regular selection.
Andrey Santos joined Chelsea in January 2023, transferring for €13 million plus €7 million in potential add-ons from Vasco da Gama, who had just won the Brazilian second division. He subsequently spent time back on loan at Vasco before a difficult six-month spell at Nottingham Forest, which led to a reshuffling that sent him to Strasbourg. There, he flourished, becoming one of the club’s standout players over 18 months. In the 2022-23 season, he made 43 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions, scoring three goals. His trajectory has been a striking example of the club’s recruitment model: from a highly promising prospect to a player who has found himself on the periphery of Brazil’s national team, earning six caps and narrowly missing out on a World Cup squad selection.
Santos’ career thus far illustrates the high expectations that have surrounded him since his early breakout and the complex dynamics of BlueCo’s transfer strategy. His potential move to Manchester United could represent a fresh chapter, but it also signals that he will join a competitive midfield environment where minutes will be earned rather than guaranteed. If the transfer goes through, it will add another chapter to the ongoing narrative of Santos’ ascent, setbacks, and continued ambitions to compete at the highest level. This deal also underscores Chelsea’s continuing approach to talent development and sale, balancing the need to develop players with the strategic value of future sell-on clauses and long-term planning.
