Manchester United closing in on $47 million Youri Tielemans transfer as Ederson deal stalls

Manchester United are on the brink of completing a deal to bring Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans to Old Trafford in a £35 million ($46.8 million) transfer, even as a potential move for Atalanta’s Ederson has been paused for the time being. The Red Devils have been linked with a raft of midfield targets this summer as they prepare for the new season. With Casemiro leaving on a free transfer and Manuel Ugarte picking up an injury during the World Cup, United have stepped up their pursuit of central midfield reinforcements.
Chelsea’s Andrey Santos has already joined United in a deal worth up to £50 million ($66.9 million), and the club has since moved quickly to secure Tielemans from Villa, with negotiations edging closer to a successful conclusion. The Belgian international, who has accepted the prospect of a switch to United despite interest from rival clubs and a contract extension on the table from Unai Emery’s side, appears ready to end his three-year spell at Villa Park as soon as the deal is finalized, according to The Mirror. Tielemans’ contract runs through the summer of 2028, but a £35 million release clause has prompted United to act decisively after Belgium’s World Cup campaign concluded.
Tielemans shone for Belgium, even captaining the national team and scoring twice as they reached the quarterfinals, before departing for his summer break following their elimination by France. United’s leadership wasted no time in launching their pursuit, signaling an unexpected but strategically sensible shift in their recruitment approach. The midfielder’s extensive Premier League experience, combined with his quality and proven ability, makes him an ideal fit for United’s current transfer strategy as they seek to strengthen their midfield for the forthcoming season.
The Tielemans bid also casts new light on the status of the Ederson transfer from Atalanta. United had previously agreed to a package worth £35 million plus an additional £3.8 million ($5.1 million) to secure Ederson’s services earlier this summer, before the World Cup interrupted proceedings. That plan has now been put on hold due to a knee problem that emerged, prompting United to pause the transfer for the time being. While the club has withdrawn from finalizing Ederson’s signing at this moment, there remains a chance that the deal could be revisited later in the summer window, potentially at a revised price depending on how circumstances unfold over the next several weeks.
As things stand, Ederson’s chances of donning the United shirt next season appear remote, with the sense that he will stay with his current club for now. In contrast, Tielemans is set to become a United player, with the move representing a notable strengthening of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s midfield options. Tielemans’ impending arrival would add experience, balance, and Premier League know-how to United’s engine room, complementing the likes of Casemiro and the newer arrivals already secured this window. The deal, if completed, would mark another significant plus for United as they push to reassert themselves among England’s top clubs ahead of the forthcoming campaign.
