Manchester United have reinforced their central midfield with a Brazilian presence once again, signing Andrey Santos from Chelsea on Monday to fill the void left by Casemiro’s departure. Santos agreed to a five-year contract with United, arriving a few weeks after Casemiro’s contract expired and the player moved on from the club.
The 21-year-old midfielder had been part of Chelsea’s setup, featuring as a substitute when the Blues clinched the Club World Cup title last year and making 43 appearances across all competitions in the previous season. Santos expressed his enthusiasm about joining Manchester United, describing the club as “special” and highlighting the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of some of his idols who have worn the famous red jersey.
“I am really excited to join a club that holds so much significance for many players and fans alike,” Santos said in a statement. “Everything about Manchester United is special; it is an incredible feeling to join a club that some of my biggest idols have represented. As a midfielder, I am really excited to have the opportunity to learn from (former midfielder) Michael Carrick. He is the perfect coach to help me take the next step in my career and push to achieve my dreams.”
Although Santos has earned six caps for Brazil, he was not included in the national squad for the World Cup, which concluded with a last-16 exit to Norway. His arrival at United arrives amid ongoing speculation that the club could be preparing another major midfield signing, with Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans rumored as a potential acquisition.
Santos’ move continues United’s long-standing strategy of seeking dynamic young midfield talent from top European clubs, aiming to blend youth with experience as they rebuild their squad depth in the center of the park. The club’s supporters will be hopeful that Santos can quickly adapt to the Premier League’s demands, contribute with his ball-playing abilities, and help fill the creative and box-to-box roles that Casemiro’s departure left behind.
This development at Old Trafford comes at a time when several clubs across Europe are also weighing midfield refreshes, but United have positioned Santos as a long-term project that could pay dividends if he continues to develop under United’s coaching staff. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on how quickly Santos can integrate with the first team, learn from Carrick’s guidance, and translate his potential into consistent performances at the highest level.
