Former NFL defensive end and ESPN/Fox commentator Marcellus Wiley is currently amid a very public and acrimonious divorce. The turmoil began over the weekend with his arrest on domestic battery charges, and it intensified on Monday when his wife, Annemarie Wiley, filed for divorce and sought a restraining order against him. Her court filings included multiple allegations of rape against Wiley, escalating the controversy surrounding the couple.
In a candid message posted to Twitter, Wiley said, “I love my children with everything I am. My highest priority has always been protecting them and preserving the relationship they have with both of their parents. Because of the public allegations made against me by Annemarie, I have been forced to respond with evidence rather than emotion. More importantly, I owe it to my children to truthfully document what they and I have endured.” He indicated that he would counter the claims with documentation and defend his character in a manner that preserves his children’s well-being.
Wiley claimed that he must confront what he described as “lies” about him by recounting the truth about his wife and their marriage. He asserted that he has spent years gathering videos, photographs, text messages, emails, and other evidence that directly contradicts the allegations and provides an accurate record of their family and the events surrounding the divorce. He asserted that this record includes evidence of Annemarie’s infidelity — including an affair with her pregnant friend’s husband — as well as serious parenting failures, a so-called “voodoo spell” she purportedly cursed upon his family, and mentions of fans she claimed “hated her” from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, among other alleged incidents. Wiley also claimed that many friends, family members, and fans believed Annemarie had “lost her mind” after she was removed from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and he stated that he agrees with that assessment.
He emphasized that he never intended for his family’s personal matters to become a matter of public record, noting that divorce could have been pursued privately. Nevertheless, Wiley said he anticipated this day would come and that he was prepared to endure hardship if it meant being with his children every day. He described himself as their hero and said he would fight to ensure that the positive, real image of him that his children know remains intact.
Wiley indicated his intention to address the accusations and related issues through the legal process, with evidence to back him up. His stated priorities, he said, are his children, his integrity, and the truth. He thanked supporters for their understanding.
As the case proceeds in court, two sharply divergent versions of events will unfold. Regardless of who is ultimately believed, the situation is deeply sad for the couple’s children, who will bear the consequences of their parents’ dispute. The public nature of the dispute has added complexity and scrutiny to what is already a painful family matter.
