Sean Miller and Texas men’s basketball have secured a major recruiting coup. Marcus Spears Jr., the top-rated prospect in the 2027 class, announced on Instagram on Thursday that he has committed to the Longhorns and will reclassify into Texas’s 2026 recruiting class. In a post that featured the Texas Hook ’Em slogan, Spears Jr., the son of former NFL defensive lineman Marcus Spears, described this moment as “the next chapter,” signaling a new era for Texas basketball.
Spears Jr. chose Texas over a crowded field of power conference programs, including Arizona, Arkansas, LSU, and Alabama, among others. “Texas basketball is becoming a big thing again, and I am excited to be part of it,” he told ESPN. “The Texas fans can expect a worker with a lot of energy. I will be trying to bring Texas a national championship.” ESPN noted that Spears Jr. was the only top-10 scorer and rebounder on the Nike EYBL circuit this past spring, averaging 20.9 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. He also helped lead USA Basketball to a gold medal at the FIBA U16 Men’s AmeriCup in 2025.
Spears Jr. is the second member of the Spears family to join Texas, following his older sister Cari Spears, who plays for the Longhorns’ volleyball team. Cari started all 30 matches for Texas this season and earned AVCA Third Team All-American honors. Miller’s addition gives the Longhorns their second five-star commitment to the 2026 class, joining Dynamic Prep teammate Austin Goosby, a five-star forward ranked No. 18 nationally by 247Sports’ Composite Rankings. Goosby joined Texas alongside Spears Jr. after a standout spring in which the Longhorns also added transfers Isaiah Johnson, Amari Evans, and Elyjah Freeman, continuing an offseason that has Texas positioned for a standout roster next season following an improbable Sweet 16 run.
Spears Jr. enters as one of the nation’s premier recruits. According to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings, he was listed as a five-star prospect and ranked No. 2 overall in the 2027 class, the second-ranked power forward and the top player in Texas. His decision to reclassify to 2026 places him in line with Texas’s immediate plans to fortify the roster for the upcoming campaign. For more on Spears Jr., ESPN and other outlets have highlighted his performance on the EYBL circuit, his scoring and rebounding prowess, and his potential impact at Texas.
In addition to his on-court accolades, Spears Jr. brings a family legacy of Texas athletics. His sister Cari’s success with the Longhorns volleyball program adds a familial connection to the university’s athletic culture, underscoring the Spears family’s enduring ties to Texas athletics. As Texas continues to assemble a high-caliber roster, players like Spears Jr. signal the program’s rising prominence and the anticipation surrounding Miller’s rebuilding effort.
This commitment marks a landmark moment for Miller’s program as it looks to leverage top-tier recruiting to reestablish Texas as a national powerhouse in men’s basketball. With Spears Jr. joining Goosby and the influx of transfers, Texas fans can anticipate a dynamic, high-energy approach aimed at contending for a conference title and pursuing deep postseason runs in the near future. The 2026 class is shaping up to be a pivotal foundation for Miller’s long-term vision in Austin.
