Sep. 26—GRAND FORKS — It wasn’t Mark Dobmeier’s plan at the start of the season to run for a Northern Outlaw Sprint Association season points championship. But some early-season rainouts at various tracks and a handful of other factors left Dobmeier in contention for a season points championship. And he took advantage of it, winning Friday night’s season-finale 25-lap NOSA feature at River Cities Speedway to wrap up his fourth points championship.”It wasn’t our intention at the beginning of the year to run for a NOSA championship but some of the races we were going to run down south got rained out and so we ended up at enough NOSA shows to win it,” Dobmeier said. “I’m proud that we put ourselves in a championship position again. We’ve been strong all year.”Dobmeier, who won his seventh race of the season, led all 25 laps on a lightning-fast race surface that saw eye-opening lap times throughout the night.Dobmeier’s fastest time in the feature was 9.906 seconds on Lap 18. He beat Brendan Mullen to the flag stand by 2.331 seconds when the final checkered flag of the season was waved at 10:34 p.m.Thursday’s rain and Friday’s cool temperatures left the quarter-mile race surface moist and sticky, which produced speeds rarely seen during a race season. In hot laps, five drivers posted sub-10-second laps and 14 of the 15 cars had lap times of 10.4 seconds or faster.”The track was lightning-fast,” said Dobmeier. “It was really grueling. It was a tough track. I was like elbows up all night.”Dobmeier came into the night with a one-point lead over Weston Olson for the NOSA season title. But Olson did not race Friday night as he is a senior in high school and played in Warren-Alvarado-Oslo’s homecoming football game.Olson won NOSA’s season-opening race in early May at the Nodak Speedway in Minot.Another indication of the RCS fast track came when Dobmeier gave a handful of fans a ride in his two-seat sprint car. His top lap time in the two-seater was 10.317 seconds. The longer, heavier two-seater never has gone that fast at RCS.Dobmeier’s championship wasn’t the only one celebrated Friday night at RCS.Nick Omdahl won the RCS season points title with his fifth-place finish.”We just raced Friday nights (at RCS) so it’s been a decent year,” said Omdahl. “It’s been a fun year. I would have rather won a race than win the track championship, but what are you going to do?”Omdahl said his plans for next season haven’t been set.”Next year is up in the air right now,” added Omdahl. “Everything is for sale, so whoever buys it will be buying a track championship car.”Four other classes raced at RCS on Friday night — the 305 winged sprints, wingless sprints, lightning sprints and modifieds.A couple of nasty crashes plagued the IMCA 305 Red River Sprint Series in their heat races and feature. Kate Taves of Detroit Lakes, Minn., edged her brother, Matthew, for the 20-lap feature win by 0.738 seconds.Ty Hanten, who finished fourth, won the Red River Sprint Series season p
