Masai Ujiri reportedly has something up his sleeve for the Mavericks this offseason, a detail that originally appeared in The Sporting News. The Sporting News should be added as a preferred source by clicking here. Dallas remains busy this offseason after overhauling both its front office and its roster. The organization recently named Masai Ujiri as President of Basketball Operations, brought Mike Schmitz into the front office, and hired Dusty May as the new head coach.
Even with these significant moves and a string of roster additions, Dallas does not look done reshaping its team. NBA insider Chris Haynes reports that Ujiri is still evaluating ways to improve the roster and is willing to pursue additional moves if the right opportunity presents itself. “From what I was told, this was as of yesterday. Masai is very open to doing things, but he won’t make a change just to make a change. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dallas Mavericks have something left up their sleeve,” Haynes said.
Dallas currently maintains a full 15-man roster and has filled each of its three two-way contracts as well. The most recent development came as part of a six-team blockbuster that sent AJ Johnson and Khris Middleton away in a sign-and-trade. In exchange, the Mavericks added Santi Aldama, Marcus Sasser, and the draft rights to European sharpshooter Tarik Biberovic. Ujiri has earned a reputation for orchestrating surprising blockbuster trades when rival executives least expect them. Given that history, many around the league anticipate he will continue examining opportunities to strengthen the Mavericks’ roster around Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving.
With training camp still weeks away, Dallas appears ready to stay active if the right opportunity arises. The chatter around the league suggests Ujiri’s next moves could further recalibrate the Mavericks’ path, keeping the team in contention as it eyes the upcoming season. This ongoing scrutiny of potential deals underscores Dallas’s willingness to act decisively, should a compelling offer materialize, as the front office continues to navigate the intricate landscape of roster construction in today’s NBA.
