Mason Greenwood: Man United’s cut from Fenerbahce-Marseille deal explained

Manchester United look set to land a hefty windfall from Mason Greenwood’s imminent move to Turkish side Fenerbahce, according to Fabrizio Romano. After facing serious legal trouble that forced the club to part ways with Greenwood—even though charges against him were later dropped—the 24-year-old forward moved to Olympique Marseille in the summer of 2024. He signed a five-year contract with the Ligue 1 giants, with a £26.6 million transfer price and a substantial sell-on clause believed to be 50 percent of profits from any future sale.
The Bradford-born striker has certainly made his mark in front of goal at the Stade Vélodrome, scoring 48 goals and supplying 17 assists in 81 appearances. Yet off-field issues have continued to shadow him. Reports of clashes with Marseille’s coaching staff and executive leadership have persisted, and his arrival sparked significant backlash in Marseille itself. The controversy followed him to Europe, and Liverpool fans openly taunted him during a Champions League match in January.
Despite Marseille’s strong finish in the final third, the club were willing to listen to transfer offers this summer if a suitable valuation presented itself. This has attracted interest from AS Roma, Atletico Madrid, and, most notably, Fenerbahce. On his YouTube channel, Romano stated that Greenwood is “very, very close” to joining Fenerbahce. The Yellow Canaries have submitted an official bid to Marseille worth about €40 million (£34 million). He noted that negotiations over the final terms of the package are ongoing, but Greenwood’s representatives have told Fenerbahce that they have accepted the terms of the contract through June 2030, suggesting the move is nearing completion.
Atlético Madrid had made a number of inquiries in recent weeks about a potential deal but ultimately chose not to pursue it further. Roma never submitted an offer, despite Greenwood being a prominent target in the Italian capital. Romano added that Manchester United will receive a percentage of the transfer fee, estimated to be just under €10 million (£8.5 million), a figure well above €6-7 million. This prospective payoff would provide a meaningful boost to Old Trafford’s budget at a time when United’s summer plans are starting to show signs of fragility.
United have already agreed a €46 million deal for Atalanta’s Enzo Ederson and have completed the signing of Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos for a total fee of around £50 million, with both deals contingent on successful medicals. The club continues to seek a marquee midfielder to replace Casemiro, with Aurelien Tchouameni remaining the dream target. However, chasing a Real Madrid star poses a hefty price tag, making the potential Greenwood windfall even more valuable as INEOS’ influence grows within the club’s strategy.
In summary, Greenwood’s move to Fenerbahce looks poised to unlock a significant financial inflow for Manchester United—one that could soften the blow of their current recruitment challenges and support their ongoing bid to recruit top-tier midfield talent this summer.
