Mason Mount: Why Man United rejected Aston Villa’s approach

Manchester United have rebuffed approaches from a number of clubs for Mason Mount, with Michael Carrick plotting a significant role for the 27-year-old midfielder in the coming season, according to a fresh report. In addition to fellow Premier League side Aston Villa, TEAMtalk states that United have turned down inquiries from two other English clubs, Fulham and Newcastle United.
There is also interest from RB Leipzig in Germany, while two Serie A giants, Inter Milan and Napoli, are said to have explored the possibility of a deal. A report carried by The Peoples Person last week claimed AC Milan had made advances after appointing Ruben Amorim, who became an admirer of Mount during his time at Old Trafford.
Sources close to the situation indicate that several clubs have “checked on Mount’s availability in recent weeks,” only to be met with a firm message that he is “not available for transfer.” Despite a challenging run of injuries and fluctuating form since his £55 million move from Chelsea in 2023, there is reportedly “no appetite” to part with him, as Carrick envisions a new role for the Portsmouth-born midfielder in the club’s future plans.
Mount has largely been deployed as a No. 10 or on the wing during his career, but United brought him to Old Trafford at Erik ten Hag’s request to operate in central midfield alongside Casemiro. The high-risk tactical experiment, which ultimately contributed to Ten Hag’s departure, appears set to be revisited under Carrick in his first full season as head coach. Whether this reversion is driven more by necessity than desire remains to be seen.
In the final match of last season, a 3-0 victory at Brighton, Carrick used Mount in a double pivot with Kobbie Mainoo. Mount delivered a strong performance, highlighting the skill set that has endeared him to managers and fans alike at club and international level.
Carrick is widely regarded as a substantial admirer of Mount, believing there remains a first-class player awaiting a sustained run of fitness to unlock his full potential. The Manchester United boss values Mount’s intelligence, tactical versatility, and work ethic, and Mount remains a highly popular figure within the dressing room, according to TEAMtalk.
Looking ahead, Carrick plans to deploy Mount in a deeper midfield role next season, as Bruno Fernandes is anticipated to continue occupying the more advanced No. 10 position for the time being. If Mount thrives in this deeper role, it could mark a masterstroke by the head coach, presenting another viable option within a squad that has looked short of depth in midfield at times.
However, there is a sense that United’s inability to land preferred midfield targets—names such as Eliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes, and Aurelien Tchouameni—might be pushing Carrick to explore internal solutions and alternative configurations. Despite the pursuit of new midfield recruits, United appear poised to formalize two fresh signings in the near future, aiming to bolster the squad’s options and address lingering gaps in central areas.
As the summer window progresses, Mount’s situation remains a focal point for United, with Carrick steadfast in his belief that Mount can contribute significantly if he can maintain a clean bill of health and sustain a consistent run of form.
