Dallas Mavericks rookie Morez Johnson Jr. said Thursday that he is eager to play again for former Michigan coach Dusty May in the NBA, starting next season.
Johnson was the ninth overall pick in the 2026 NBA draft on Tuesday after helping the Wolverines to their second title last season. He was a second-team All-Big Ten selection, averaging 13.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.1 blocks while shooting 62.3% from the field.

The 6-foot-9 forward joined the Mavericks on the same day the organization announced May as its next head coach after parting ways with Jason Kidd on May 19. Johnson is anxious to work with May again after one season with him in Ann Arbor.
“I have an advantage to know what to expect from him,” Johnson said. “But other than that, like playing time, Dusty is going to hold me accountable, hold me to a high standard and push me every day.”
Johnson established himself as a lottery pick because of his motor, defensive versatility and length, boasting a 7-foot, 3 1/2-inch wingspan. He also plays with force down low and has a developing shot after a productive showing at the combine last month.
Dallas was also drawn to Johnson’s rebounding, competitiveness and upside. The group is ecstatic to plug Johnson into different lineups, particularly on defense, given his size at 255 pounds and ability to protect the paint and clean the glass at a high level.

Johnson should have the chance to compete for rotation minutes because of his vast skill set. He is ready to get to work and prove himself to the team on and off the court.
“I think I’m an everyday guy,” Johnson said. “I’m going to show up every day professional, ready to do my job and be a great teammate and great person. I’m a lead-by-example type of guy: be here early in the gym, last one to leave.”
