McKeel girls, boys sweep team competitions at city meet

   ​LAKELAND — The district meet, which officially begins the postseason, is nearly four weeks away (Oct. 26-27) for McKeel, but preparation began Thursday, and Wildcats head coach Roy Wilshire was pleases with the results.Heavily favored in both the boys and the girls competitions, McKeel swept the team titles as expected at the 37th Annual City of Lakeland Swimming and Diving Championships at Gandy Pool and left Wilshire with very little to complain about.“I thought we swam very well tonight,” he said. “I was really not wanting to have weather be a problem here because I want the kids to know we need to get ourselves. set for now the postseason. That’s what this begins. George Jenkins was second with 130 points with Lakeland Christian in third with 48 points.For the boys, McKeel again swept the three relays and won all but four individual events. The Wildcats finished with 190 points. George Jenkins was second with 107 points with Lakeland Christian in third with 98 points.Here are the top highlights from the city meet.Palmer, Scarborough,Swinburne, Lee double upFour swimmers, two girls and two boys, won both their individual events. Two-time swimmer of the year Bryce Palmer won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.37 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.49.Her time in the 100 breast is a little off as Palmer has been working to returning to form as she began the season nursing a groin injury.“We’re just going to have to keep pushing for the next few weeks to get down to where we want to be,” Wilshire said.McKeel junior Claire Scarborough has established herself as the sprinter to beat in the county this season. She won the 50 freestyle in 25.48 and the 100 free in 56.27.For the boys, McKeel senior Chance Swinburne has been battling an illness for the past week but he sweet the 100 free (50.79) and the 200 free (1:53.25).George Jenkins senior Nico Lee was the lone swimmer from McKeel to grab two individual events. He won the 200 individual medley in 2:04.54 and the 100 fly in 56.51.More winners for McKeelJunior Elin Jonsson flipper her results from last season when she won 100 backstroke and took second in the 200 IM. This year, she won the 200 IM in 2:26.87 then took second in the 100 backstroke (1:05.93) by less than a second.Sophomore Jocelyn Chanthavongsa won the 500 free and was second in the 100 breast (1:11.24).For the boys, sophomore Isaiah Lamb won the 100 breast 1:04.56 and was second in the 200 free (1:55.92)Bryson Jones won the 100 back in 1:04.42 and was second in the 500 free (5:23.5).Brandon Sadler, battling an illness, won the 50 free in 24.70.
