Guiding the Portland Storm to an impressive 102-92 road win over the Atlanta Dream on Saturday, Megan Gustafson, the Iowa women’s basketball legend and a standout in her eighth WNBA season, added another major milestone to her already storied career. The 6-foot-4 center dominated offensively for Portland with 17 points on an efficient 7-for-11 shooting, including 2-for-4 from beyond the arc and 1-for-1 at the free-throw line, while also contributing four rebounds, one assist, and one block in 27 minutes of action. More than just scoring, Gustafson’s performance propelled her past the 1,000-career-point mark, underscoring not only her status as one of Portland’s premier players in the franchise’s inaugural season but also her sustained excellence throughout her career. This milestone comes hot on the heels of surpassing 500 career rebounds, a milestone she reached on July 9 against Las Vegas. Since reaching the 800-career-point plateau on May 29 against the Atlanta Dream, Gustafson has been exceptionally productive, averaging 14 points on 53.1 percent shooting, 42.6 percent from three, and 88 percent from the free-throw line, along with 4.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists in about 27 minutes per game over 14 appearances. Taken together, Gustafson’s breakout season in Portland has her posting averages of 12.1 points on 54.8 percent shooting, 40.6 percent from three, and 84.2 percent from the line, along with 3.8 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 22 minutes and 30 seconds per game across 23 games. Looking ahead, Gustafson and the Fire will return to action Tuesday, July 14, facing the Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., with tip-off slated for 10 a.m. The latest Iowa coverage can be followed at Hawkeyes Wire on X (formerly Twitter) and on Facebook for ongoing Iowa news, notes, and opinions, with further updates from Scout on X: @SpringgateNews.
