Mets Have Decided Which Players Are Available At Deadline

The New York Mets are entering the second half of the MLB season with a 40-57 record. The Mets are eight games behind of the Washington Nationals for fourth place in the National League East, so it sure looks like a lost season in Queens. The Mets already fired manager Carlos Mendoza, and with the MLB trade deadline coming up on August 3, several players could be sent out as the front office shakes things up.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementRumors swirled for some time about which players the Mets might trade, but on Thursday, there was a major update on that front.Chelsea Janes of SNY reported that the Mets have let other teams know which players are available.”A rival executive said the Mets informed their team that the sale is on, and that everyone but young stars Carson Benge, A.J. Ewing, Christian Scott, Nolan McLean and the obvious, Juan Soto, is available,” Janes wrote. That means players such as Francisco Lindor and Bo Bichette could be dealt, along with pitchers Clay Holmes – who is recovering from an injury – and Freddy Peralta.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementNow, that doesn’t mean that the Mets trade everybody, but it does mean that they are at least going to listen to the rest.Peralta’s case is interesting, especially since the Mets gave up quite a bit to acquire him in the offseason in a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers.Bichette can opt out after this season and hit free agency, so getting an asset for a rental might be a smart move for New York.Holmes is recovering from an injury, but if healthy, he could be an appealing option since he can be a starting pitcher or be used out of the bullpen.Francisco Lindor’s contract is going to be tough to move. He is in the middle of a 10-year, $341 million deal that runs through 2031, so there are still a few years remaining.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementRelief pitchers Brooks Raley and A.J. Minter project as the most likely players to be moved, although neither one will net a large return for the Mets.Still, it seems there is a fire sale, or at least an attempt at one, in Queens amid a frustrating season. The Mets could also get in front of other teams and move some players now while they have the chance, so it should be an interesting couple of weeks for the franchise.
