Mets recall Dan Hammer, option Tobias Myers to Triple-A

Prior to today’s series finale with the Royals, the Mets added Dan Hammer to the major league roster. The right-hander will wear number 81 as he makes his big-league debut. In a corresponding move, the team sent Tobias Myers back to Triple-A and designated outfielder Jared Oliva for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Hammer, a University of Pennsylvania product, was drafted in the 13th round of the 2019 draft by the Orioles. At 28 years old, he has spent parts of the last six seasons within the Orioles and Rays organizations. Tampa Bay selected him in the Rule 5 draft a couple of years ago, which effectively ended his time in the Orioles’ system. This season, Hammer has posted a 2.77 ERA over 13 innings with Binghamton and a 1.77 ERA over 20 1/3 innings with Syracuse for the Mets’ organization, signaling a promising step forward and adding to the growing list of relievers who have suited up for New York this year. His arrival is likely to be fodder for a future Sporcle quiz on the 2026 Mets, underscoring the depth and turnover in the bullpen as the team navigates the season.
Meanwhile, Tobias Myers took a blown save in yesterday’s Mets win, surrendering a run in the sixth inning immediately after entering for Christian Scott, who had worked five scoreless innings. Myers ultimately worked two innings and allowed that lone run. With the team seeking fresh arms and facing a short turnaround before the All-Star break, the Mets opted to send him back to Syracuse to reinitialize his workload and roster status. Myers began the year strong, posting a 2.05 ERA over his first 10 appearances, but his ERA has climbed more than four runs since then. Since May 6, he has recorded a 10.23 ERA and a 6.35 FIP in 22 innings across 15 outings, including a few starts. After an attempt to stretch him out as a starter on May 30, the organization reintroduced him as a reliever, where his status has hovered on the edge of being rostered or not. Upon his June 15 return, Myers has posted a 12.66 ERA and a 5.93 FIP in 10 2/3 innings over five outings, allowing at least one earned run in each of his last seven appearances and in nine of his last ten at the major league level.
