Legendary World Cup goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa bid farewell to the Estadio Azteca, currently known as Mexico City Stadium, after making an emotional entrance during a 3-0 victory over Czechia.
Ochoa has declared his intention to retire following his sixth World Cup, making him the only other player besides Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to appear on six World Cup rosters.

Mexico swept through its World Cup group without conceding a single goal, becoming the first team to accomplish this feat since 1990. Mexico is one of three host nations at this World Cup, and has also served as the unexpected base for the Iranian national team following complications with the U.S.

But during a historic evening for Mexico, Ochoa made his grand entrance and waved goodbye to his professional soccer career in spectacular fashion. It was widely anticipated that Ochoa would start Wednesday’s match against Czechia, but he was named on the bench as the in-form Raul Rangel was selected.

However, with Mexico leading 2-0 following goals from Julian Quinones and Mateo Chavez, Ochoa began warming up and was subsequently brought on.
The Mexico City crowd erupted for Ochoa, who applauded the fans as he sprinted onto the field. It proved to be the perfect cameo as he kept a clean sheet, while Alvaro Fidalgo netted a third for Mexico, reports the Mirror US.
After the final whistle, Ochoa was mobbed by his teammates and hoisted into the air. He was then spotted kissing the goalposts at the Azteca as he departed the field for what could be the very last time.

Ochoa will turn 41 after the World Cup and retire as a global legend of the game. Throughout a distinguished career spanning Mexico and Europe, it is his international performances that have truly defined his legacy.

He first made the World Cup roster in 2006, but was the third-choice goalkeeper in Germany. The following year, Ochoa was promoted to backup goalkeeper and began earning appearances in the Gold Cup and Copa América.
Ochoa then became Mexico’s primary goalkeeper during qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and was named in the Team of the Tournament after the national team won the 2009 Gold Cup. Controversially, he was demoted to backup for the World Cup.
His World Cup debut finally arrived in 2014, arguably his most unforgettable summer with Mexico.

Ochoa kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory over Cameroon, before being named Player of the Match for producing four outstanding saves in a 0-0 draw against host nation Brazil.

“It was the match of my life,” Ochoa said at the time. “To do it in a World Cup, in front of all the fans, it’s incredible.” Mexico advanced to the knockout rounds, where Ochoa delivered a standout display in a 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands.
He kept Mexico ahead as they protected a 1-0 lead, but the Netherlands ultimately fought back, converting a penalty in the 91st minute to claim the victory.
In 2018, Ochoa recorded nine saves during a 1-0 victory over Germany and a combined 25 saves throughout Mexico’s four matches. In 2022, Ochoa denied a Robert Lewandowski penalty as Mexico drew 0-0 in the group opener against Poland, but that proved to be his last outing in Qatar.
