Miami Hurricanes Baseball Among Transfer Portal Winners

MIAMI, Fla. – Coming off a 39-20 season – failing to advance to the Super Regional – the Miami Hurricanes baseball program was among the most aggressive in attacking the transfer portal. It started with revamping the pitching staff following the severe struggles. The process started with landing former Wake Forest righty Blake Morningstar, then Kaden Varela Payne and JUCO commit Michal Kovala, along with others joining. On the batting side, the Hurricanes brought in third baseman Dawson Harman, shortstop Trey King, third baseman Trent Caraway, and left fielder Braeden Schnabel. They’ll provide depth and a boosting supporting cast around catcher Alonzo Alvarez, outfielder Dylan Dubovik, and infielder Gabriel Milano.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAccording to On3, the Hurricanes are the eighth-best winners following the baseball transfer portal window – the only Atlantic Coast Conference program to be featured in the top 10. Coach J.D. Arteaga has Omaha standards, but it’s been 10 years since “The U” last reached the College World Series – 25 years since the last national title. However, the new-looking roster could propel them over the hump.Coach Arteaga will have several voids to fill, especially with the recent conclusion of the MLB Draft. Lefty ace Rob Evans, catcher Alex Sosa, and All-American third baseman Daniel Cuvet were among the four selected – right-handed pitcher Ryan Bilka being among the exclusive group.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementShortstop and second baseman Jake Ogden is signing with the New York Mets as an undrafted free agent. The Hurricanes nearly have an empty infield, except for Vance Sheahan, who never explored the transfer portal and went undrafted. He’s guaranteed to return with another year of NCAA eligibility available.Milano would’ve been an easy slot at third base – filling in for Cuvet in the final two months of the season following the back stress fracture diagnosis. He showed glimpses of being an everyday starter, but the additions of Harman and Caraway could provide some competition.Brandon DeGoti and Jailen Watkins didn’t play much this past season, but could find themselves in expanded roles next year. Plus, Rookie Shepard – part of the 2026 recruiting class – could deliver an immediate impact.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe revamped pitching staff should battle better against hitters, regardless of Rob Evans deciding to return or not – selected by the San Diego Padres with the No. 365th pick (12th round).Coach Arteeaga has delivered steady progression, but the pressure rises for a title to return to the Coral Gables campus. The Hurricanes aren’t looking to take steps back, despite several departures, but move forward to claim the prize.Join the Community! Don’t miss out on our ROUNDTABLE community and the latest news!
