​By bringing in an NBA champion head coach to run their program, North Carolina expects things to go very well over the next few years. It remains uncertain whether Michael Malone eventually wants to return to the NBA, but his ability to handle superstars, win at the highest level, and other factors suggest he could be a perfect fit for the Tar Heels. North Carolina will ultimately have to improve in all facets if it wants to remain this type of program, but there’s reason to believe Malone can be that guy. The past few years for this program haven’t gone as planned; any year that doesn’t end in a national championship is typically viewed as a disappointment, but it’s positive to hear that Malone understands that.Speaking about what he believes it will take to get back to the top of the college basketball world, Malone had a lot of good things to say. He said what every North Carolina player should be listening to, adding that every facet of its offseason training needs to be taken seriously.“If you’re serious about that [winning a National Championship], your first goal is always going to be: we have to find a way to get better every day, and that might be in a conditioning, weight room, player development session,” Malone said, per Lazarczyk. “That might be in a practice, in a shootaround, in a film session, whatever it may be…”We have to find a way as a program to get a win every day and to get better. And if you do that, then you’ll have a chance come NCAA Tournament time to be a team that can compete and maybe get to a Final Four. So that’s number one, can we get better every day?”Teams who are serious about winning truly find a way to improve every single day. Even if it’s something as simple as showing up to study hall and doing what’s needed in the classroom, these guys typically take care of business at a very high level. Malone seems to be a no-funny-business type of guy and isn’t there to mess around. He understands the value North Carolina has placed on its basketball program throughout its history and is trying to raise the standard even higher. Of course, saying and doing are two completely different things, but all of his comments early on suggest that he’s really locked in here and is looking to have his guys ready to go in important moments.
