Michael Olise: From Reading to the World Cup

By admin — In News — July 9, 2026

He arrived on the scene after being rejected by Chelsea and Manchester City, yet now he is starring for France in the World Cup quarter-finals and stands as a potential Ballon d’Or winner. Michael Olise’s ascent from the Reading U15 ranks to global superstardom has not surprised Brendan Flanagan, the head of academy recruitment at the club. “Michael was a special talent,” Flanagan recalls. “At the start of the under-15 season, when he had just joined, he stood out as a unique player, almost a freak of nature—the kind of talent you’re always hoping to uncover.”
After a season in which Olise tallied 25 goals and 28 assists for an era-defining Bayern Munich side in the Bundesliga, his World Cup form felt almost preordained. His five assists for France match a World Cup record, and now he is gearing up to help France in their quarter-final clash with Morocco on Thursday evening. “From a very young age, he could do things that senior professionals on the first team could not,” says Flanagan. “He had the ability to read the game faster than anyone else, to pick out a pass that splitting defences wide open, and with the ball he could decelerate as he approached a defender, then drop his shoulder and surge away.”
Olise is known for being notoriously difficult to interview; off the pitch he shuns the limelight, preferring solitary games of chess and quiet moments. Brendon Flanagan describes him as a “unique player” even as a teenager. Coaches and teammates emphasize his resilience and focus, traits that carried him through early rejections from several Premier League academies. It all began at Reading in August 2016, when Flanagan saw an opportunity to bring Olise into the fold. After years in the academy, he made his Reading senior debut in 2019, becoming one of 67 appearances for the club’s first team. Fans and fellow players immediately took notice of the young prodigy’s promise.
“It’s a great achievement to come from Reading,” says Reading’s current striker Jacob Brown. “I played against him during the Covid season when he was breaking into the first team, and you could tell right away he was incredibly talented.” Olise’s performances earned him a move to Crystal Palace in 2021, before a subsequent transfer to Bayern Munich three years later.
With France, Olise stands on the verge of greatness. He has become a central reason the team is considered among the favourites to win the tournament, with bookmakers placing France as the team to beat in the quest for the title on July 19. His old Reading teammates and coaches will wish him luck with a “bonne chance,” while for Morocco’s defenders the challenge may well be “sacrebleu” as they prepare to face him.
As his journey continues, the football world watches a player who began far from the brightest lights and rose to illuminate the sport on the grandest stages. Olise’s rise is a tale of talent nurtured through perseverance, a rare blend of instinctive vision and technical poise, and a relentless pursuit of excellence that has carried him from a seaside English town to the global spotlight of international football. From rejection to reverence, his path reminds us why scouting, belief, and opportunity matter in a sport that continually redefines what a prodigy can become.
