By keeping the core of Michigan’s roster largely in place this offseason, interim head coach Mike Boynton appears to have earned the University’s trust and has been rewarded with a two-year contract. It has been less than a month since Dusty May departed Michigan after guiding the program to a national championship and subsequently accepted a role in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks. The university acted swiftly to elevate Boynton to the interim position at that point, entrusting him with the challenging task of preserving the May-era lineup, which many regard as among the strongest in the nation and a legitimate Big Ten title contender once again.
Ohio State supporters followed the development with particular interest, as rivals often dislike watching Michigans’ success, especially when it seems to be at such a high level. Under May’s leadership, the Wolverines appeared poised to remain a thorn in the Buckeyes’ side for years to come. With Boynton at the helm, the future looks more uncertain. At 44, Boynton is best known for his seven-year tenure as head coach at Oklahoma State, where he posted a 119-109 overall record and captured a 21-9 mark in the 2020-21 season. After a 12-20 campaign in 2023-24, Oklahoma State elected to part ways with him, and he resurfaced as an assistant coach in Ann Arbor.
Many will credit Boynton’s ability to preserve much of the roster as a key factor in securing his new contract. Yet after guiding Michigan to a national championship, the cushion for error may be significantly smaller as he moves into the next phase of his tenure. Big Ten adherents, and Ohio State fans in particular, are sure to monitor the situation closely as it unfolds.
