Mike Boynton Jr. had done such an excellent job of keeping the band together following the departure of Dusty May to the NBA that he had the interim tag stripped off his title, and was named the official Michigan basketball head coach with a two-year contract. However, Boynton wasn’t able to keep them all.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWhile there wasn’t mass attrition in Ann Arbor, Boynton did lose one major piece, even if it’s not an instant contributor. Guard LJ Cason had flipped from FAU to the Wolverines when May came north just over two years ago. A reserve who had been waiting for his opportunity, he very well could have gotten it if it weren’t for a late-season ACL tear that Cason sustained, precluding him from about half of the upcoming season. However, Cason will look to do so at another program, as he’s entering the transfer portal, according to On3.Cason is the sole departure from the program following May leaving, as every signed recruit, transfer, and extant player on the roster who hadn’t graduated or gone to the NBA has announced their intention to return. While that’s excellent news, it is a blow to the maize and blue to lose a player who wasn’t just a spark off the bench, but certainly had looked like he had the opportunity to be a starting point guard down the road.Behind Elliot Cadeau, Michigan doesn’t really have a bona fide point guard, so even from a depth perspective, when Cason is healthy, the Wolverines are that much more depleted.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThis article originally appeared on Wolverines Wire: Michigan basketball guard LJ Cason enters portal
