​Michigan basketball has secured a major commitment from one of its remaining undecided players for the 2026-27 season following Dusty May’s departure. Quinn Costello, a McDonald’s All-American incoming freshman from The Newman School in Newton, Massachusetts, confirmed on social media that he will remain with the Wolverines and will stay at Michigan despite May’s exit. Costello is widely regarded as a top recruit, ranked No. 32 nationally and No. 6 at the power forward position in the 247Sports composite rankings. He played a key role in Michigan’s highly regarded freshman class, and his pledge ensures that all six members of that original signing group will join the program, making Michigan’s 2026 class the No. 1 in the Big Ten and the No. 4 nationally.
Costello was in attendance for Michigan’s rout of USC at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor on Friday, January 2, 2026, marking his third visit to campus but first for a game. “It’s been awesome to watch,” Costello told the Free Press in January, reflecting on Michigan’s start to the season. “To see what they’ve been able to accomplish, the teams they’re blowing out. … It looks like they’re having a ton of fun out there and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
Interim coach Mike Boynton Jr. and his staff have managed to keep every decision-maker in the program on board so far, with all 13 players who have declared for the upcoming season choosing to remain in Ann Arbor. It has been a concerted effort by the players to stay together, a sentiment echoed by recent graduate forward Harrison Hochberg. “We all believed Sunday night, when we went to bed with Coach May still at the helm, that we could win the national championship,” Hochberg said on a podcast with Hail Media. “We are all going to go to bed Monday night, Tuesday night, Wednesday, Thursday believing the same thing… If the guys in the locker room don’t change, we are going to be good, and I think everyone started believing that.”
The last remaining potential piece is L.J. Cason, a junior point guard who originally committed to May at Florida Atlantic in 2024 and followed May to Ann Arbor after May took the Michigan job. Cason tore his ACL last February and is expected to miss most of next season, though a potential change to NCAA eligibility rules could allow him to return later in the year.
