Arte Moreno, who purchased the team for $184 million following their World Series-winning season, agreed to sell the team to Kroenke Sports & Entertainment for a reported $4 billion — a record sale in Major League Baseball.This marks a new beginning for an Angels franchise that has been stuck in mediocrity over the past decade or so. This past decade of baseball for the Angels has done a major disservice to superstar Mike Trout, who, once upon a time, was in GOAT talks even though he has no playoff wins to his name in his 15-year big-league career thus far.Trout even mentioned that a sale was “needed” so that the franchise can have a “fresh start”. He was a true five-tool player, and the Angels had considerable space on their books to add a few pieces to help the team get over the postseason hurdle.Alas, the Angels simply never got it right in free agency. They signed Albert Pujols to a 10-year, $240 million contract that hampered the team for years after Pujols declined sharply in his first season away from St. Louis. They then compounded matters by signing Josh Hamilton to a five-year, $125 million contract the following year.They did blossom into a strong playoff contender in 2014, winning the AL West division title by virtue of having the best record in MLB. We know the rest — the underdog Kansas City Royals stunned them in the NLDS, sending them packing in a sweep, and the Angels franchise never truly recovered.It was all downhill from there. The Angels have now missed the playoffs for 11 straight seasons, and it’s only a matter of time before that number officially becomes 12 when they become mathematically eliminated from playoff contention in a few weeks.The Angels simply did not address the roster’s greatest weakness — pitching depth.
