Miles Russell has achieved a dream that has eluded many amateur golfers in the United States for more than a century: earning a spot on the Walker Cup team. The 17-year-old from Jacksonville Beach was named among the first four members of the American squad on July 9 by the United States Golf Association. The selection placed Preston Stout of Dallas, Tyler Watts of Huntsville, Alabama, and Ethan Fang of Plano, Texas as the top three Americans in the World Amateur Rankings as of July 8, with Russell added to the roster by the USGA Team Selection Committee.
Russell has been making waves across the amateur circuit. He was seen in Raleigh, North Carolina, on May 29, 2026, at the UNC Health Championship, where he marked a putt on the 10th green before tossing his ball to his caddie. The Walker Cup itself is a storied amateur team event between the United States and Great Britain & Ireland, named in honor of George Herbert Walker, a former USGA President who is the grandfather of President George H. W. Bush and the great-grandfather of President George W. Bush. This year’s matches are scheduled for September 5-6 at Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland and will be played on even-numbered years moving forward to avoid clashing with the World Amateur Team Championship.
The Walker Cup traces its origins to 1922, when the United States won 8-4 at the National Golf Links in New York, with contributions from legends like Bobby Jones and Francis Ouimet. The U.S. team dominated last year’s edition, securing a 17-9 victory at Pebble Beach and Cypress Point in California, which pushed the overall series lead to 39-9-1 in favor of the United States.
This year’s selections mark a balance of experience and youth. Stout and Fang are returning veterans, each making a second Walker Cup appearance, while Watts and Russell will be making their debuts. Nathan Smith, the U.S. captain, spoke highly of the quartet in a statement, noting that Stout and Fang bring valuable experience and continuity, which is crucial heading into Lahinch. He added that Watts and Russell represent rising talents who have already proven they belong on this stage. “Together they give us a great mix of proven and rising talent, and I couldn’t be more excited to lead this group,” Smith said.
The selection process will continue as the USGA appoints six more players before and after the U.S. Amateur Championship, which runs from August 10-16. The winners of the 2026 U.S. Amateur Championship at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, and the 2026 McCormack Medal—the award given to the nation’s top amateur—will receive automatic exemptions if they are U.S. players.
Russell, currently fifth in the World Amateur Ranking, is competing this week in the PGA Tour’s ISCO Championship, his seventh tour start. He previously tied for 39th in his U.S. Open debut at Shinnecock Hills on June 21. He has already left a notable mark on the amateur circuit, having represented the United States on both the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams and been the only two-time winner of both the Junior Players Championship and the Sage Valley Invitational. He has also earned two AJGA Player of the Year honors.
As the last player with ties to the First Coast to reach the Walker Cup, Russell continues to raise the profile of his region in national and international amateur golf. With a storied past behind him and a bright future ahead, his inclusion on the Walker Cup team signals an exciting chapter for American amateur golf and a promising push toward Lahinch, where the competition will resume its tradition of fierce, high-level match play.
