Minnesota Vikings News and Links: Two Weeks To Go!

By admin — In News — July 12, 2026

We’re nearing the deadline: rookies report in a little over two weeks. I’m still hopeful the team signs Derek Barnett. He was a solid rotational edge rusher last year, likely won’t break the bank, and appears to be a perfect fit. Beyond his on-field contributions, his teammates have consistently praised him as a standout presence in the locker room.
A recent report notes that the Eagles released Derek Barnett, a former first-round pick who had 21 1/2 sacks in 73 career games and none in his last 15. The team issued a statement thanking him for seven seasons of effort and energy, highlighting a memorable play as a rookie in the team’s Super Bowl win over the Patriots and wishing him the best moving forward.
From the Texans’ perspective, Barnett has earned respect in the locker room. Will Anderson Jr. recalled seeing Barnett in the training room and described him as a warrior who can wreck plays. “He’s solid,” Anderson said. “He’ll just go out there and wreck anything.” He has been a welcome addition to the defensive line room, bringing experience and knowledge about the game. In six games for the Texans entering Saturday’s playoff showdown, Barnett had 19 tackles, 11 quarterback hits, and 2.5 sacks, underscoring the impact he’s had on the field.
Jonathan Greenard echoed that sentiment, calling Barnett “the unsung hero.” He noted that Barnett has always been a productive player, with a long track record of success from his days at Tennessee through his time in Philadelphia, and he wasn’t surprised by the level of production he has shown with Houston. Greenard emphasized that Barnett’s consistent play and competitive spirit align with the team’s culture.
Barnett’s overall numbers with the Texans—five sacks, 26 tackles, four tackles for loss, and seven quarterback hits in 16 games with one start this season—underscore his value since being claimed off waivers from the Eagles. He had 2.5 sacks in four starts and six games for Houston last season, and his career totals include 29 sacks, 49 tackles for loss, 94 quarterback hits, five forced fumbles, and five fumble recoveries. He isn’t one to seek the spotlight; he’s about putting in the work and letting the results speak for themselves.
“Everybody is putting in the work here,” Barnett said. “So it’s about going about it the right way.” His character and leadership are qualities that teams value when building a culture, and there’s a sense that he would fit well with the current group if given the chance.
Looking ahead, the first training camp practice is 20 days away, and rookies are due to report in 14 days. The timing adds a layer of anticipation as teams finalize their rosters and establish leadership and culture ahead of the season. The question remains: will Barnett be back in the mix, or will he sign elsewhere? Either way, his presence in recent months has left an imprint on the teams he’s played for, and the conversation around his impact—both on the field and in the locker room—likely won’t fade quickly.
